Using 7D in Snow

So I live in NYC and it's going to snow like crazy today - I'd love to go outside and get some great shots with the 7D - curious how I should protect it (a plastic bag?) -- I just have the 7D and kit lens...no other accessories that I need to cover etc. Any suggestions that don't involve buying gear since this is today and I can't wait for it to ship :)

Unrelated question - when storing the camera should I leave the battery in the cam or take it out?

Thanks!

The 7D will be fine, especially if you read the article that William linked you to. The kit lens on the other hand is not weather sealed, so I'm not too sure how it will do.

I'm new to that as well, but I live in Canada so I'm sure it will come up at some point or another.

Hmmm...interesting - didn't realize the 7D was so well sealed - should I just throw a plastic bag around the lens then since it's not weather sealed?

I was in NYC last sunday in the rain using the 7d and the kit lens. I kept it inside my coat when I wasn't using it and it held up fine in the rain.

I'm in Jersey right now and it's just horrendous snow. I guess bring a cloth to wipe the lens as well right?\

:bath:

I'd love to hear how the camera holds up long term however. Corrosion can seep into a camera over time and spread no?

I'm sure a little snow/rain won't hurt it but how resistant is weather resistance?

The reason I evoke concern is as far as I know Canon doesn't really cover water/rust damage in their warranty. I heard some owners had to replace their cameras entirely. Of course I don't believe they were 7D owners but still.

i can't believe i'm in toronto and i'm jealous of the snow you guys are getting in NYC, hahaha. i'd be out in a flash with my 7D.

A good safety measure I use is running a tiny strip of gaffer's tape around the edges of the LCD screen and top display. I've got a moisture mark under the glass before I did this, drives me nuts, but havent had a problem since, and I shoot in really crappy conditions. We did a shoot at 30 Rock when it was heavy snow and rain mix. Camera held up like a pro.

It never hurts to have one of these in the bag though. Takes up little space, worth the few bucks

Took mine out in some freezing rain last night. It went in and out of a warm car and spend no more than 5 minutes outside at a time. Dried it off when I got home, everything seems to work fine.

I used it in the snow but the problem I had was water seeping in at the base of the lens, i caught it early but any longer and i would have had water inside the camera near the sensor. I guess this is where Canon L series become very handy, mine is a Tamron.
