Using 24fps from HF10 in Premiere CS5: Please Help

Just got an HF10, shot 24 fps (in a 60i) and thought reverse telecine in PP would consist of

1. opening an AVCHD 24p project
2. interpreting footage to 23.976 and choosing no fields progressive scan

But the audio is slow and every fifth frame has a problem. At first it seems to be a repeat frame but after a split second, every fifth frame shows interlacing.

Can't find an answer anywhere. Odd because this cam has been out awhile.

What am I doing wrong?

edit: in After Effects, Guessing 3:2 pulldown works; it chooses WSSWW. However, when I import the AE project into PP, the comp remains red-lined on PP's timeline. Rendering a huge AVI from AE and importing that into PP works but this is a clumsy solution.

What happens when you create a sequence from the clip (which should generate a matching sequence) instead of dragging the clip to the sequence?

What does PP describe the AE video as if you right click on the footage (in PP) and tell it to show the info on it ?

I'm not sure I understand your first question. If it's in AE after I've used the Interpret Footage box to correct the pulldown, dragging it to the new sequence icon creates a new sequence with the correct settings. And it's then that I've saved the comp and imported it into PP that, to answer your second question, shows that the AE video is correct (23.976). However, on the timeline, it's red-lined and, although there's no interlacing, every fifth frame is a repeat of the fourth.

edit: after investigating why that last statement was, i checked the sequence settings in pp and saw that it was 30p. not right obviously; i guess this was created with a former attempt to put an unreverse telecined clip on it?

so anyway i created a new project, made sure the sequence was 24 and, voila, the AE comp plays in PP. Slow, but that's my laptop's fault. Now if I can just get it to work with Pluraleyes, I'll be happy.

Thank you for your questions -- they led to this correction.

So is there no way to work with what's been termed "malignant" 24 in 60i AVCHD in PP without AE coming to the rescue?

In pp Canon's pf24 will need to have pulldown removal done outside the program. Panasonic files recorded as 24p in 60i will correctly open as 24p, but for some reason canon files don't. The canon files have metadata stored saying how they are recorded, but adobe doesn't seem too interested in implementing the auto pulldown removal. I've filed a bug report for this a while back. If more people do so, they might get around to fixing it.

As far as I can tell, no other NLE can remove Canon's pulldown either. (I was looking into Vegas Pro.) So that sort of puts the responsibility on Canon's flagless 60i, it seems.

I saw your comments on the Adobe forum, CF01. What method do you use to prepare your clips? I think at this point I'll use AE unless I need to sync separate audio via Pluraleyes, in which case I'll either render an AVI from AE or else use something like TMPGEnc. Or just shoot 30p.

Exact: Do "native 24p" files from the HF G10 work? I saw you had posted about owning that camera. I am looking for a main cam to accompany this HF10 B cam after having finally sold my beloved DVX.

I use AE if I need to do pulldown removal since it doesn't require me to use up much extra hard drive space. I usually shoot 30p, so thankfully I don't have to deal with it that often. The 24p files from the HFG10 work fine. I wish I knew if there really was an AVCHD standard that canon wasn't obeying or if it is just software makers choosing to ignore the metadata that canon has provided.

I'm convinced it's Canon's way of encouraging purchase of the HFG10 or XA10. I see that not even the M-series offers native 24p. But wow, the XA10 is one sexy camera.

The only thing holding me back from the HFG10 is the lousy bokeh. Not that I would get it for that but just expect it at that price point. I love Canon's products but those guys sure can be stingy.
