Used camera for sale: scam?

I saw a HMC40 with 20 hours, sold by a wedding video guy, for $1650, with the XLR adaptor.
Anyone heard of scams like made in China cam, grey market?
Any tip on how to buy used?
ANd finally how do you check the "milage" on the HMC

Thank. Can't wait to put my hands on one of these and be part of the club! Tired of reading stories and not being able to write mine! :-)

It's in the menu, inside other functions, I think it's the last item but that's just the time that the camera has been on, no recording time, just on..

it is still useful as we don't really need RECORDING time, remember, it is all done digitally, not with mechanisms and heads like the DV cameras.
So, knowing how long it has been on is useful too, that pretty much tells you how much abuse it was put thru

That price isn't like a fire sale or anything. New camera goes for $1800 and another couple hundred for the XLR adapter.

Chances are he used it for one wedding and it didn't match his existing gear, or didn't like its low light capability so he has decided to unload it and buy the HMC150.

Or maybe it is a scam. I usually get a phone number and call the person. You can tell a lot when you can dial a person up and chat a bit. It isn't perfect, but it has helped me from getting burned over the last 8 years of selling and buying gear online.
