New with the Tascam H2

I just got my Tascam H2 P2 and a Oktava MK12. I have been doing some tries with that micro and a Sony shotgun and I have some questions.
The sound I got it is quite clear but very low, it is always around -20db with the input volumen around 7 or 8 /10. I don´t know if I am missing something but it is too low. (my settings are 48khz and 16 bits)
Second question, it is quite ridiculous question but I am afraid to push the pieces too hard so I prefer to ask first. The volumen input has two wheels. How do you move the interior wheel?

I have to used on monday for a docu so I would be very happy to get any advice.
Thanks in advanced
Pablo

Please Tascam users, could you give me a hand, the day of record is getting closer and I dont know what I am going to do.

check if the 20 db pad is not inganged
by the way the octava is low output mic , maybe you needto be closer or going higher
you hold the outsude weel ansd you move the inside -

Thanks Oleg,
Yes I had the Pad to 0 dB.
I dont know if there is any input settings menu, I didnt find it, where I could do something.

i dont remeber thwere is something relative to the gain settings
only the input pads
so if you are with 0 db pad then just push the input gain higher with the weel

Did you screw the whole Oktava together? Check and see if you didn't insert the OPTIONAL -10db pad.

The mic comes as 3 pieces and it sounds to me like you have the pad in there. It says -10db right on it. Make sure you only have mic body and capsule... with the other little barrel left OFF until a situation is LOUD.

Next... make sure you have selected MIC for input... not LINE... and be sure you have PHANTOM ON.

After that... no worries. If the sound is still too weak then the mic isn't close enough. Nothing more to say about it.

Move the inner wheel by holding the outer wheel while turning the inner wheel. The gain/volume is set up like this so that you can easily ride/adjust levels for both channels relative to each other. If you're only using one mic then put the inner wheel 1 to 1.5 down from the outer... then try to run your hottest channel properly, with peaks at the edge of clipping. You will be adjusting both channels at once with just the outer wheel after you set it like this.

This way you have a safety track in post in case you blow any peaks.

Thanks to all of you.
I didnt put the -10dB and I did all the things you say but my levels are around -20dB still. I will have to put the wheel volumen input to maximum 10/10 to get more input sounds. I dont think that is the best way to get more sound.
Thanks again

How far is the mic from your subject? You may simply be too far away for good levels. Have you tried a different mic? How about a different cable - conductors and connectors etc do break and if one of the conductors in the cable has failed you'd still get signal but at very reduced levels.

Thanks Steve,
Well, the micro is never more than 1 meter away, around 50 cm. I have tried with another micro, a sony shotgun (sony C74) and the results were the same. May be is the cable or connectors. I will try that. I hope it would be the cable.

There is something wrong in your setup or with the HD-P2 itself. I used my Octava directly into my P2 many many times before I got my Schoeps, and it worked great, with the input gain never more than 5. Did you get your Octava at Sound-room.com?

Phil

what does it matter with sound room - thetaare 20 places where to get octavas
he has the same results with c-74
the only thing i can imagine is something wrong with phantom power suplyed for the both mics

I have an HD-P2 and I've run Oktavas directly in and I've never experienced these problems either. I set my HD-P2 up exactly as I just told you to and never had any problems. If you're doing everything posted in this forum then something is faulty.

Hey Matt, when did you pick up the HD-P2? I thought you were still on your 671. Next you'll tell me you've bought a copy of Boom Recorder too. :-)

Want to buy some Comteks? :-)

Phil

I've had the HD-P2 since last summer... right after I talked to you. Hey if you want to consider my previous rental as a down payment then I probably would buy them! They worked great. (Thanks by the way.)

Hi again,
Welll, yesterday I used finally together. At the end it was OK, the sound come between -12 and -6dB, but I had to have the input volumen around 9.

The Oktava works OK, but it is too sensitive to any hand move on the boom. I got also the new shock mount SM20. It does not work perfectly as I said any move of a finger it is transmited to the micro. (I have bougth in Oktava On line in Germany so that is not the issue).

One question to Ptalsky, what do you mean with input gain to 5?. (the wheel of volumen or you something you do in the settings)

Thanks anyway to all of you.
Regards
Pablo
