Correction... 24-70L Ok so i'm midway through shooting a Documentary i'm Dping using the 7d and I rented this lens and it really is a dream to work with both on the video and stills side of the fence. Super quiet and super fast auto focusing for stills. Lens glass and build quality is just amazing. I luv it. I opted for this lens for the versatility in not having to change lenses in the field cuz there'd be no AC just me, director, sound man and a PA. Also because of its speed of 2.8. So this and the nifty fifty (f1.8)which i used for all interior interviews as this is being shot with all natural lighting and i needed that extra speed. Both lenses are performing beautifully.

I had been considering the 24-70L for a while and i finally got to rent it from someone who just got it. Out here in Jamaica u cant rent lenses as readily as the states so u gotta buy ... so its good to actually work with it before i buy. Now i just need to save for it! anyone who is on the fence about this lens and needs a good zoom (zoom is also super smooth and quiet), get this lens. Its canons top of the line for a reason.

I still prefer the look of my old primes for narrative type films but for everything else...this lens is tops.

What is the exact look from your old primes that you like better?

they are not as sharp as the modern glass...the have a more organic look to it (more film like to ME) and they flare alot easier which i tend to like.

edit: well my supertak is pretty sharp...but still more organic

No prob. And just to add another important point. The L lens also makes the camera fully weather sealed which came in handy because it started to rain which would have considerably slowed down the shoot that day...even though we had umbrellas and I had my kata bag raincover which I could have used, it was a pleasure to be able to shoot in the rain with just the camera ...didn't have to cover it. So that made things much more convenient.

Seems your not the only one that feels this way. Thats a tough lens to buy on ebay, because people get into bidding wars, and price is always well over a grand for these. Thanks for the review. Im looking for a lens now, im thinking of going with the tokina 11-16. for my wide. People like this one a lot too. but i have only seen clips shot with it. never used one though.

I have held that tokina and used it for like 5mins on a 60D so I couldn't give you a first hand account of visual quality. I mean in the short time it seemed good, but I'd have to spend more time with it. However EVERYBODY says is excellent. So I think you are safe. However what I can tell u is its built like a tank. I was very surprised how heavy and solid it was.

The Canon 24-70L is a great lens, I tested the Sigma 24-70 2.8 and in the video mode there was really no difference. For stills the Canon blows it away, but if you're using it for mainly video the Sigma is worth the price. I think I ended up getting mine on ebay for $350.

Have you looked at the 17-55 2.8iS? It is not weather sealed, but has the same or better image quality to the 24-70 and it is wider which I found very useful. It also has IS!

When I got my T2i I knew I had to get the best optics possible, but I also don't have a ton of money to spend on a bunch of Primes so that's why I got the 24-70mm L Series lens. I don't know what it is but it just seems like the perfect overall lens for these cameras.

I have been on the fence on this very lens. I have a set of M42 primes and I love them. My work is often run and gun, though, and I have been looking for an all-in-wonder lens. I am in saving mode and have been debating between the Canon 24-70 2.8 and the Tamron 24-70 2.8. I know L series is great but from reviews I have read the Tamron is really nice as well and I can save $800.

I have never heard a Photog say anything bad about the Canon, but I have never heard a Porsche owner say bad things about their car either. I am considering renting both to give them a head-to-head. The biggest up side of the Canon is I can get almost what I paid for it when I finally stop the "buy stuff insanity" this video trip has taken me on.

I haven't tried that lens. I do however have a tamrom 17-50 that I'm not so pleased with for varying reasons and after working with the canon 24-70 those reasons are magnified. I will say I do find the 24-70 range a bit better for me. I do like the wide end of 17 but prefer the longer reach of 70. Ideally I'd love a a 17-70mm 2.8 lens L lens.

Since you guys have the opportunity to rent lenses unlike me I'd say rent them for a day and try then both out in different shooting circumstances. For me to plunk down $1300 on a lens then find out it isn't for me is not an easy thing, so I'm glad I could have used it. I haven't had such a good experience with my tamron 17-50 2.8 VC lens but I know tamron has some quaity control issues so I may have gotten a bad one. But I find my tamron zoom function WAY too stiff whereas the canon was silky smooth. And the tamrom focus throw is very short so I have to do some ninja like focusing. The canon has a much longer throw so focusing is easier. However i have no experience with the lens you are talking about...just my 17-50. Also for me weather sealing is important as I like to shoot moto X with my dvx and have wanted the 24-70 and 70-200L lenses for a while cuz those conditions are really dusty...and like on this documentary it rained that day and I was still shooting with ease. Is that worth $800? I guess that's up to you and what you shoot.

+1... this is a great lens. Mine is actually the 28-70L, which is the previous generation, but the cool thing about these zooms is very little to no breathing when they focus.
