Use iPad Mini for External Monitor?

Hi All,

I am probably going to be purchasing an iPad Mini and am trying to decide between the new one w/ the Retina display and new chip and the older model.

One thing that would definitely steer me towards the Retina display is if I could use the iPad Mini as an external monitor for my D5200. The HDMI out is 23.976 PsF, FWICT.

Any thoughts on if this would work? THANKS MUCH!

Thanks! Yes, I've been doing some web searches and have come to the same conclusion. :( It seems that the USB port on all the iPads is out only. It looks like one could theoretically connect via wifi, but that sounds like a RPITA, if it's possible at all.

I run DSLRDashboard on my Nexus 7 (2013) connected via usb to my Nikon D600.
It not only gives you a 7" monitor but also allows touch screen focus and control
over most parameters. It can also be used wireless with the TP-Link router.

Thanks. I saw a Youtube video on using a Nexus 7. But unfortunately the app I need the iPad Mini for is iOS only. :(

Get the retina version anyway!
Once you've used a retina display, you can't understand how you ever got by without one.

The day iPads can have hdmi in, they will kill a large part of the monitor market.
one thing that sort of bugs me about getting a pro monitor (in my case the Odyssey 7Q) is that they are around €2500 and still only 1280x800. That's about half the resolution of a €400 iPad mini...

i would love love to be able to use my iPad Air as a monitor...

Well, there's Camranger, which is wireless (and kind of overpriced) - seems built more for still shooting, but google around and see what you think.

Once you get out of iOS, there's a lot of Android stuff out there. No idea how useful for video they are, still shooters are all over that stuff.
