USB PCMCIA reader for P2 on a Mac

What are you trying to use the first one for?
I can see a use for the second one

My iBook has no PCMCIA slot and my G5 has none also so a conecter like this would be great to carry around and use on both. Also the iBook has no option to instal a PCMCIA so I would need this. Nice find.

Now would that first conecter work with P2 Media?

These might work:

This would mean you'd have to reach behind to insert the cards. Probably a PITA.

If you wanted something you could slap this into a PEECEE's drive bay:

This also might work if it were put into a firewire enclosure since it's ATA and then it could be used on Mac. If I had a spare enclosure I'd try it out as I have a couple of PCMCIA cards I use for reading compact flash cards on my powerbook.

Wait, so on the first one (USB) the green part is a PCMCIA card and the device is the black part..? I can see now... TINY! Nice! it looked to me as if that was a plug shaped as a PCMCIA card... like those accesories such as radio recievers and GPS devices that are planning on making with the SD cards... the device can be anything and the way they plug into your device is with an SD card looking

BE careful guys

BE careful guys

Be careful guys, the biggest problem I have found is that most do not read 32 bit bus, only 16 bit.

You need cardbus 32 to read a P2 card, anything less will not work.

Most desktop devices that port to the front of your computer case, only do 16 bit, and will not work. Some of the ones where it mounts to the pci bus and exits out the back of the computer may work.

Also I am not positive but the USB may also be too slow, but I have not tried it.

I would imagine that you would need something like firewire to cardbus 32.

Companies don't really make these because if you had something new enough that had firewire port (on a laptop) then you most likely also had pcmcia.

On a desktop, most uses for this is to read memory cards, or to use a wireless card, so if you had a computer new enough to use firewire, then you probably had provisions for memory card readers and the like, so no need to make a firewire to pcmcia cardbus 32 device.....except if you wanted to read P2 cards, for that Panasonic wants to rape us and charge us a grand or more.

I love Panasonic, but for what a P2 reader really is and cost to make, they are charging too much.

The new macbookpro's don't have a PCMCIA slot. So a reader would be very handy.

I'm not really sure why Apple dropped both the Firewire 800 and the PC card slot.

To keep costs and space at a minimum... But that's not really an issue for a "Pro" machine, is it? They really should have started out with this as their ibook variant.

ExpressCard/34 is much faster than PC Card speeds. FW800 Express Card/34 cards are in the works.

Obviously Apple doesn't design its hardware around that part of the HVX200 workflow. You can always get a G4 PB or PC laptop for downloading.
