US bans most electronic devices, including cameras, on flights from eight countries

If you are planning to fly to the US from some Middle-Eastern and African countries and carry camera equipment or other electronics, you should probably have a closer look at the new rules put in place by the Trump Administration on Tuesday.

Passengers departing from 10 airports in Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates won't be allowed to carry on electronic devices larger than a cellphone. This includes laptops, tablets and cameras.

The new rules took effect at 3 a.m. E.D.T. on Tuesday, and must be followed within 96 hours by foreign airlines flying to the United States from the affected airports – but not US-carriers. It is currently unknown how long the ban will remain in place.

According to Royal Jordanian airlines, medical items are exempt from the ban and banned electronic items can still be transported in checked baggage. Officials estimate that overall 50 daily flights to the US will be affected. Homeland Security says the ban is not based on a threat of an imminent attack.

Some people like to keep their cameras in the cabin and some shoot videos in the cabin.

BTW Casey Neistat has almost 34 million views for that video shot on a flight from Dubai on Emirates .

UK has followed suit. I just landed back from Dubai. Got to go to Turkey in a couple of weeks, this new regulation is going to be a major PITA. They must have some very specific intel, though it does seem a little bizarre as it would be a breeze to re-route via another country. Guess Peli will be selling a lot of cases!

This is a freaking nightmare. I flew back from Casablanca twice last year and once the year before. The main problem isn't that we cannot carry on our cameras anymore. The problem is many carriers will not let you even purchase space for checking really expensive extra cases no matter how much you are willing to pay. If you have a certain number of people. It's usually myself, a producer and a sound mixer, carriers like Air France only allow each passenger a certain amount of weight. The last trip there and back, we were held up for hours at LAX and coming back through Paris, we almost missed our once a day flight back to LA because they would not let us carry on cameras and our sound mixers Sound Devices recorder and expensive Lectros. We went up three levels of management and finally a nice French supervisor took pity on us and let us carry on our excess weight backpacks and cases (because we were 'artistes') besides all of our checked gear made it through.

What this means is that from now on, if we are shooting in these countries, we will have to DHL/FedEx or UPS our cameras and supporting gear, what a disaster and super expensive too. This is going to cost my clients thousands of extra dollars. Hopefully this is just a temporary measure as it is all just security theater anyway. It is not a Trump ego mandate, I have no doubt that our Intel picked up chatter that these vermin are going to attempt to take down a jet with a small device. But as others have noted, our enemies are not stupid, they'll find an alternate way of doing it and in the meantime, millions of us will be highly inconvenienced and will collectively spend millions of dollars in extra fees, hassle and time lost to comply with this mandate.

Agree absolutely Otherwise the UK would not have done the same and at the same time.

Someone has picked up something. What who and why I suspect we will never know. Also as with much of this sort of thing they may be doing it to change something somewhere else that appears to be complexly unconnected. IE drop stones in water to fill up a gap is actually because the ripple will nudge something the other side of the lake.. (was going to say pond but that might give the wrong impression)

Pan Am Flight 103 with 259 on board was blown out of the sky by a bomb inside a cassette recorder that was in checked luggage.

Happening now ( 16:00 22 March 2017) terrorist attack on Westminster bridge, London. (one ind of the bridge is the Parliament building) One dead several serious injuries Parliament in lock down. Interesting thing is the BBC are using a drone to report. This renders the Police inner and outer cordons almost irrelevant. A live news camera with a close arial view can be deployed in minutes. Particularly in places where a helicopter is not permitted.

They don't seem to have a camera on the ground doing the usual talking head reporter.

Would an RX100 be allowed? It's about the size of a phone, maybe that would be a good option... (I own one, it rocks, I'm being 100% serious)

edit: the BM pocket is also about the size of a phone; the big load of batteries you'll need for that one might be a problem, though

It was the raid on Yemen that led to intelligence that certain groups were thinking of plans of how to bring down planes with electronic devices carried onto planes.

Probably best to focus on the relevant aspect of this - how does it impact filmmaking folks who fly around the world. No need for politics here, and against the rules anyway. If similar regulations are adopted for the rest of the world, and domestic flights in the U.S., this is going to be a major pain.

Agreed, and bless you for saying it.

Political posts have been deleted. Nobody here cares whether you support the administration or oppose it or any of that, or just how stupid you think the policies are or whatever -- you can go discuss that at politics.com or someplace where it's allowed. Such discussions are strictly prohibited here, and have been since the founding of this board, and will forever be prohibited here.

The only fact of the matter here that is relevant is that we, as content producers, are potentially impacted (as puredrifting pointed out so eloquently) and so we will have to cope with the logistical and budgetary implications that these new regulations impose.

Here is another video like Casey Neistat did in first class on Emirates shot with what looks like a Canon G7X that is about the same size as the RX100.
