Urgent: Newbie Dealing with Spanned and/or Incomplete Clips-trying to avoid data loss

I'm guessing this information is somewhere in this forum, but I haven't been able to find it after an hour of searching. So apologies in advance if I'm covering old ground.

I have an HPX170 that is new to me and I'm working on somewhat old technology a PowerMac G5 Quad, i.e. pre Intel, Mac. I'm using my camera as a card reader until I can get a standalone device. I'm capturing to 16 & 32 GB cards. FCP 6/Studio2. To keep things organized, I've been copying one card to my hard drive at a time.

Because I'm working with a G5, Panasonic's P2 CMS software currently downloadable from their site is not supported on my Mac as the provided download is for Intel Macs only, and mine is pre-Intel. I don't know if there was an earlier version that was supported on PreIntel Macs. If someone knows of a link to such an earlier version, I'd appreciate it. Or perhaps it would be small enough to email to me?

As the camera is new to me, until yesterday only been testing it and had not considered the following situation which occurred in the a real (i.e not a test) very long interview that consumed most of 4 cards. BTW, I'm recording in 720 24PN. While the interview was not all one take, there are files on ever card that span successive cards and the middle two cards span both the cards before and after each one respectively.

I'd begun copying the Contents folder and lastclip file of each cards to separate folders on my hard drive when I realized that I may have problems with the spanned/incomplete clips. BTW, data is still safe on the cards which have not yet been reformated but ideally I would reformat soon as I need to shoot again tomorrow.

BTW also, after reading the manual and this forum, I remain unclear as to the difference between incomplete clips and spanned clips. The manual makes nearly no reference to spanning but focuses primarily on "incomplete". SO to clarify, I'm referring to clips which, as thumbnails in the play mode of the camera LCD screen show up marked with little exclamation marks in pink squares.

If I drag the repective contents folders into the log and transfer dialogue in FCP will spanned/incomplete clips be able to marry up?

Am I making a serious error expecting that the Spanned /Incomplete clips can be married up from data copied to the hard drive?

If yes is the correct answer to my second question, how should I handle this in this case?

Or do I have no choice but to upgrade my computer so I can use the P2 CMS software to do the marrying up (assuming that it does this at all)?

Advice at your ealiest convenience would be most appreciated.

Best,
Peter

Apologies... I intended this post for the Workflow part of the forum. I'm not sure how it got into the general forum or how to move it.

OK, I see one thing I missed in my original search which is Barry's sticky on proper procedure NOT including the drag+drop method. Sorry about that.

OK so I won't do that.
And I will write-protect cards from now on before any ingest process.

However...

What is the downside of using Disk Utility to create a disk image of the card? I should imagine a thorough verification protocol is built into the disk image creation process which probably makes it slower but ensures reliability...?

I see elsewhere in this forum some people have been able to run the P2CMS software on non-Intel macs. I haven't been able to try this yet as none of the links on the web or from within this forum or from Creative Cow can find the download. Perhaps Panasonic's server is down?

Nevertheless with all three methods, drag & drop, capturing straight from the card and creating a disk image I have been able to get incomplete clips (as they continue to be denoted in the FCP 6.0.6 log and transfer browser) to marry up.

Another thread in this forum (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...complete-quot-next-to-it.-What-does-that-mean) seems to be unresolved on this matter. Except from it I gather Im not the first person to have this problem.

So far the only posting in this thread are mine. Is there anyone out there with any advice?

Not sure if I'll be of much help, but here's a few things:
If you can locate P2CMS V1.4.4 or 1.4.7 it will run on the G5 PPC computer. Says it requires "intel" but it will work. I am still using it today on a G5 and the latest version for intel on a new mac pro.
Sounds like possibly your clips got corrupted. You could try to repair the clips in camera using the menu in the MCR (playback) mode.
Drag and Drop method can be risky, but I personally have done it hundreds of times with no problems. I have always write-protected the card when doing this. Not recommending you do it because of that, just saying I have never had issues. To be fair, I now only use P2CMS to duplicate and compare the card (with card write-protected) to another drive and then Log and Transfer from the drive (not the card).
If you can play the clips back without problem (not sure from your post whether or not you can) you may have other options for capturing the clips. My guess is that if they are showing up in camera with an error, or incomplete, then they may not play back in camera properly either. (attempting to repair them may work).
Is your camera firmware up to date? Should be v4.10 (required for using E series cards).
Is FCP up to date?
Spanned clips refers to clips that begin on one card and finish on another. The lastclip.txt file is necessary in the root directory of the NO NAME volume for spanning.
Did you change the name or directories or anything with the file structure of the P2 volume?

Hope some of this gives you some ideas. Good luck.

Hi DGW,

I've been waiting over 3 weeks for someone to reply, and so am very glad you responded. Thank you. I have been unable to locate an earlier version of P2CMS such as 1.4.4 or 1.4.7 that would run on a Mac PowerPC G5. Do you have the installer somewhere on a drive? Could you share it or could it be uploaded to this forum as a resource, since evidently others in the past at least have also needed it but couldn't find it.

I'm confused about the necessary camera firmware. There is not a word about firmware info in the camera's manual. Where do I look for version info about the firmware on this camera (evidently I've been looking at the wrong thing in the past...) As per http://vimeo.com/groups/hpx170/forumthread:6556, I was of the impression that the version information was accessed through the viewer mode on the camera as System Info under the Property menu. Mine is version 1.10-00-0.00. This is a far cry from v. 4.10. Seems I must be looking at the wrong number. Any insights?

Fireware updates are supposed to be available at https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/p2ecard.htm but as I say, today—as has been the case on the other occasions I've looked—that link isn't working.

Peter

Sorry, the V4.10 is for the HVX200A. I see you have the HPX-170. Your current version is 1.10-00-0.00, so you're good. For future reference, here are some current links.

The firmware is located here:
https://eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/soft/upghpx170_e.htm

The P2 driver and software download page is here:
https://eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/download.htm#p2cmsmac

The main Panasonic P2 Asset support page is here:
http://eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp/p2ui/guest/TopLogin.do?lang=en

Since you are using a G5, the P2CMS software here won't help. Let me investigate how I might be able to make that available.

Thank you DGW.

Those links work! Yes, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could find an earlier version of the p2cms utiity for the G5.

And this goes for anyone out there on this forum who may have a copy lying around on one of their drives. Please, if you have the installer, let me know so I might arrange to get ahold of it.

Peter
