Urgent - Another corrupt SSD card

Mitch, I've just had another corrupt SSD card. The files play fine on the Odyssey7q but won't show up on my mac or when using the Prores transfer tool. I've been in touch with your support team, gone through their advice. That made no difference. I've now paid for and downloaded the Picture Repair 2 software they recommended at my own expense and the .mov files that created can not be opened. I'm at my wits end, I have a client I need to deliver a video to and can't access my files. This is the second time this has happened and I've noticed recently other people on this forum have had the same problem. I've never had corrupt cards and for this to now happen again it's just simply very worrying. A professional product shouldn't do this once, let alone twice. Is there anything I can do to get my video files back?

We are working directly with the client via Skype and email as this provides the fastest response time. I'll let him comment as he wishes. I only take things "off forum" to better assist people.

I'm not saying this is the OPs problem, but I will say that when I have had problems with my Odyssey, it has been because of low voltage. I was using the same big Sony batteries I use on my FS700 and they are just barely strong enough to power the Odyssey properly. The battery would start off providing around 7.8V and within an hour it drops to around 6.8V. All my problems have occurred at this point and beyond. I have had clips get corrupted on 3 different occasions. However, once I figured out that it was connected to the voltage, I started switching out batteries before they got below 7. Since then I have not had any problems. Of course, having to switch out a battery after an hour that still has plenty of juice is a bit ridiculous. That is why I am going with a new more reliable battery solution. Hopefully this means that I can avoid any future issues.

I can't say if OPs problem is the same as mine, but it could be a factor in other people's Odyssey issues. Just something to keep in mind.

Hey guys, this problem is still trying to be resolved. I had to send my SSD back to the USA to see if CD could retrieve the video files. I will keep you all posted......

Hey guys, just to update you all. I sent my SSD card back to the USA and Convergent Design managed to recover all files. Not a nice experience thinking I lost files and not having them for a couple of weeks but CD were very professional and got the problem solved as soon as they could. Massive thank to Mitch and Dan. Professionals as always. Cheers.

It seems, several 7q users had problems with their SSDs.. me to… Be aware, that it can take quite a time when you have to send your SSD to CD.... (For me, in the end, 5-7 weeks)

The recorded files played on the SSD, but I couldn’t eject the SSD safe and I couldn’t download the files to my computer.

1)
I contacted ConvergentDesign (17. June) and we tried several solutions, I also bought a recovery software recommended by CD. But it didn't work, so I got an RMA to ship the SSD do CD. (21. June) CD told me that my dealer has to send the SSD. (It’s quite strange that I wasn’t allowed to send it directly.)
So, I contacted my dealer, Visuals Zürich. Then I delivered them the SSD. (22. June) I added some paperwork: the RMA, MY address and a description of the problem.
2)
What I didn’t know: Visuals Zürich delivered the SSD first do Visuals Geneva. And then, an extra bunch of delay kicked in: I was told, that they need to get the OK from another company*, before ConvergentDesign allows them to ship the SSD to the US.
*the European Import/Export Company for ConvergentDesign Products?

3)
Two weeks later!! Visuals was allowed to ship the SSD to Convergent Design.

4)
Approx. another 2 weeks later. The SSD was fixed. And on the way to me… But now I got a call from FedEx. Some documents are missing, there will be another delay….
Also, CD used the slowest FedEx delivery, which takes one week.

The process can be very complicate and time consuming.

Usually, the CD service is great and fast. But the hole shipping process toke so much time...

I finally got my SSD with the recovered files back. CD did a great work with recovering them (but also, it seems to be a software problem I could not eject the SSD )

BUT:

I contacted CD 49 days ago.

My dealer got the SSD 44 days ago.

Most of delay was dead time, only approx. 5 days de SSD was actually with CD working on it.

About 30 days delay could have easily been avoided by CD and their contractors.

If you have clients waiting, 49 days is far to long…

Why isn't anyone pointing to the reason why this has happened.

I have had 3 x 7Q's over the last 2 years and have used them for hours and hours and hours. Batteries, AC power supply, dual slot recording, updated firmware.

First of all I have had the issues described above. The 7Q lost power, and the files would play on the 7Q and not on the computer. Luckily they were test files and I formatted and was off to shooting on SSD.

The 7Q is extremely trustworthy when used properly.

1. YOU MUST ALWAYS EJECT SSD
2. YOU MUST ALWAYS POWER UNIT DOWN (AND LIKE ABOVE COMMENT MAINTAIN MINIMUM POWER)
3. DONT FORMAT SSD's ON COMPUTER ONLY IN UNIT
4. MAKE SURE HARDWARE ISN'T DAMAGED

I've used multiple working 7Q's enough, and also seen every mistake that can be made with them. When those 4 rules are followed it is 100% reliable, EVERY TIME.

Not to sound like a jerk, but I couldn't believe this thread exists full of complaints about CD's great service to fix a mistake instead of concentrating on why it happened in the first place.

If you are not able to realize what your mistake was, I would look into if you have other people helping you. It's really easy to power down 7Q by accident. If not, it is hardware damage. I've had one 7Q get dropped and could hear the damage inside. I sent it to CD and they fixed it for very reasonable price even though drop was completely my fault.

We are working to streamline the process for international shipping on RMAs.

When using an Odyssey, it is important not to let the power get too low. Many people here like to use the Sony L-series batteries as they are the same as the ones in their FS700 cameras. But these are 7.2v batteries and the minimum operational voltage on the Odyssey is 6.5v. That means that there is only so much available run time on these batteries for the Odyssey. When one tries to Safe Eject or power down (which includes a Safe Eject) on a weak battery, a low voltage can lead to a corruption of the file directory system on the SSD. The files themselves are fine and can be read on the Odyssey. Sometimes powering back up on a fresh battery and Rebuilding the SSD will fix the issue, and sometimes not. There are a few ways this issue can manifest and sometimes we can help a client remotely to fix the problem. But other times the SSD must come to us and we need to go through logic gates kernel by kernel to correct the issue. Trust me it's no fun, but we're here to help.

Don't run your power low. If you're setting up a new system, I suggest you use higher voltage batteries. That can be Sony U-series like on the FS7 or FS5, or you could use a larger battery to power everything off D-Tap. And when in doubt, Safe Eject or just power down properly and swap to a fresh battery. Your Li-Ion batteries actually work better if you don't fully drain them anyway.

why it happened in the first place

I always eject SSD
I always power down my units
i never formatted the SSDs on a computer
Hardware isn’t damaged

And you sound like a jerk, blaming me for the long time it took go get a fix.

As already mentioned, they did a great job in recovering it.

BUT

I don’t know how you work, but i never had to wait so long for a repair, with so much wasted time. For example, after i got the RMA, why does my dealer need an extra allowance to send the odyssey, and why does this take 2 weeks?

The service of CD and their response time is great. But they make international handling and shipping extremely complicated and time consuming. I ship a loth to/from the US, but it never was so complicated and time consuming as with CD and their partners.

Mitch, what batteries brand would you recomend?

I have brand new, big (original Sony) L Series batteries, but i remarked that the voltage can change drasticly within minutes.. it can drop and go up again. Never hat problems with other equipment, only the 7q shows this behavour.

I personally use Sony L-series 970 batteries (the big ones) and just make sure not to ever let them drain too low. If I was starting out I would definitely use Sony U-series as they are 14.4v. I might consider the Swit or other brand versions that also have a D-Tap available on the battery, but I do not have any personal experience or history with them to be able to make a recommendation.

i blame you for not looking into why it is happening. And how can you be sure your hardware isnt messing up? You claim that you made no mistakes, so hardware is the logical answer.

Unless you believe that a perfectly setup 7q can randomly have this problem. I do not. Cause and effect. You are choosing to ignore the cause of problem.

I use them to… but even with the brand new ones fully charged, it can happened that a low voltage warning appears after 10-15min working…. And then disappears for 1-2 hours, until the batteries are actually to low…
A behaviour, I heard from other 7q owners/my dealer. It seems it happens mostly with fast changing temperatures. (Inside/outside)

@ yachacha

This is the first time this happened.. I/We use two 7q since about 2 years… At about 100 Projects..

And I looked into it: I talked with CD, I talked with my dealer, I searched the internet.

I even did a calibrated battery test for 3 days…

But you seem to be the absolute Odyssey expert it seems, knowing more than the CD Crew itself….
And you think, the 7q has absolutely no software bugs? Yea, the update lists tell another story… But you seem to have an magical 7q…

And I got a hint from my dealer: Even with perfect working L Series batteries and brand new 7q they had this problems. It seems, the regular voltage/temp change can could cause that. (By the way.. my dealers service station checked my 7q to….)

And you really don’t get it why I am complaining… It isn’t about the error itself, it is about how long the whole shipping process took.

After receiving the RMA, waiting 2 Weeks to get an additional allowance to ship the 7q … It seems, in your world this is normal… For me, this is just wasted time. It seems, the shipping itself took 1 week each way.. 2 weeks in total.… I wasn’t allowed to ship it myself, and I asked to choose a fast shipping method, and I would pay for it. I shipped hard drive to the US within 24hours, but 7 days?... 2 Weeks waiting for the “go”, 2 weeks shipping… You are ignoring this as a problem. fanboy?
