upset

A hard working kid is someone who works overtime on christmas break, just so he can help his family pay rent. What did you get your Mom for christmas? A return receipt?

Chris - I do know you. Unless that's not your real name.

I understand it's not the camera you wanted. (It's like asking for an Xbox and you get a PS2.) BUT, if all I wanted was a DVX100A (Xbox) and my mommy promised me I could get it alooooooong time ago, then I would have made sure that's the camera (game console) she got and that no other camera (game console) was substituted.

For example: On "the list" you should have written - "DVX100A* and 3 Locations where it is in STOCK!! (the * would then refer your mother to a VERY important section stating, "Any substitutes will result in a tantrum.") Also, every day prior to Chistmas I would be bugging my mommy, saying, "Don't forget, it's the DVX100A (Xbox). Not the GL2 (PS2). Not the XL1 (GameCube). Not the VHS-C (Atari)."

I do feel bad for your mother. She tried to do the right thing. BUT, once again, the fact that you ended up with a different camera most likely means you did not effectively communicate with your mother the importance of this "specific" camera and that the salesman had better communication skills with your mother, than YOU. Live and learn.

You will probably return the camera. But, please, before making your Mom pay even more for a DVX100B or DVX100A, think about what you are going to do with the camera. I know you're HUGE in Europe, but have you shot anything from beginning to end before? You've only been a member for a short time, have you really researched this camera? Personally, I've been making videos (off and on) for 15 years and the DVX100 is WAY too much camera for me. I don't know anything about masterped or getting the "film look." But I do have stories to tell so, for me, a GL2 would have been a better choice. If this is your first major camera, then (same as a car) consider buying a used one. I bought a used DVX100 and it's worked fine.

Sorry, but this whole thing sounds like a Mom trying to make her son happy by buying a VERY expensive camera, that will just end up in his closet or in a garage sale in a few months.

Yeah hey it IS Christmas after all! Be cool everybody! Chris is a great guy and I love him very much.

Hey I went for a ride in my nephew's brand new truck yesterday... that he got two weeks after getting an XBox 360 that was supposed to be his Christmas present (he is 16 years old)... and I sat there listening to him talk about the touch-screen radio he wanted to put in it, etc. etc. The kid doesn't even HAVE a job! His mom, who bought him the truck... lives in a $60K house in a "fading" part of town! She will make payments on this thing for 60 months! He is supposed to get a job and help out... uh-huh. Sure.

My mom is a JW and we never had ANY holidays, birthdays, etc. Nothing. Nada. One year I almost got Nada III.

Everyone quit whining. Give Chris a break... I would have been bummed also. A GL2 'aint a DVX, that's for sure.

I would have loved to get those socks from my mom PK... I got diddly my entire life.

EDIT: PK you put up some of the funniest posts on the entire forum... let's make a joke out of this and get back to the eggnog!

Chris... I hope you end up with a DVX one way or another.

I feel cg's pain.

This morning I found myself the owner of a Magiqcam IIa system - and I specifically told Santa that I wanted a Steadicam Ultra Cine!

I mean, really! The nerve of that porky-ass cookie-gobbling milk-swilling sleigh-driving son of a gun!

I'll never believe in Christmas, again.

Anybody wanna buy a mint-condition Varizoom Flowpod/Sportster Rig? Low-mode, and everything!

Mattin, is "JW" the abbreviation for "Jew," or for "Jehova's Witness...?" I think the no-Christmas-presents thing works, either way...

Chris you sounded like a baby in your first post. ANd like PK, I wanted to slap you.

But reading on I see what you are saying. It completely sucks to have specific requests distorted by some chump who pretends to shoot for MTV. I've had the same thing happen to me whenever my parents bought me skate gear for christmas. Flat out it blows and makes you want to kill clerks.

On the same hand, you should have done a backflip when you saw the Cannon and then told your mom that you loved it and that she was the best mom in the world and that this was the best christmas ever........Then hours later you ask her if she still has the reciept and if it'd be okay with her could you exchange it for something else, because "after all mom, this is a lot of money, to be spending. We Really should get the other camera." All the while reassuring your mom that she is the best and did the right thing....

And if you didn't do that, then PK should be allowed to give your camera to orphans to film him smacking you.

merry christmas kid.

strange, sitting here in Austin, I can see all sides of the issue. But the bigger one seems to have been lost. I hate the whole commercialization of X-Mas. I also hate stupid salesmen. (ask me about the tyres on the sportscar being backwards sometime) I really hate ungrateful people. But I can understand everyone's pov.
Chris asked for and then got his hopes up for a certain camera- disappointment ensues. How he handled it shows his character and his maturity and his appreciation for the parents he has.
Salesman- doing his job, sell stuff to people.
The gang on DVXUser- keeping everyone real (humble)
PK- pointing out how nice it is to live where almost everyone has enough to eat and how much we take it for granted
I feel for Chris's mom. She's just trying to make him happy, the goal of almost every parent I know. So she's not a video guru, dude, she upgraded by a couple grand to a more expensive rig.

OOPS! fell off my soapbox

Chris- congrats on the great haul for x-mas. make sure your mom knows how much you appreciated her effort. Dedicate everything you do to her.

maybe we should all just be really thankful our biggest worry today was whether or not Chris got what he wanted for X-Mas. Pretty insignificant when looked at in the light of the world we live in.

All good points...although I think a salesman's job is not just to sell stuff, but to do so with some accounting of the purchaser's actual goals and requirements. I've had a couple jobs selling very expensive equipment, and if I sent a customer out the door with the wrong item, it was on me when he came back dissatisfied...

max,
of late I find less and less responsible people in the role of salesperson. Go to any motorcycle shop in the country and you will find salespeople anxious to sell you the fastest thing going with no concern or question of your riding experience. Then everyone gets a hit on their insurance when some kid goes out on a brand new RR and bins it 8 hours after rolling it out the door.

looks like I got back on the box. sorry abuot the minor jack.

Chris- how did you tell your mom of the situation?

I'm lucky, in that I buy my bikes from a dealer who's been in the business for about forty years, her husband is the chief mechanic in the shop, and they are serious about the product...I have seen her decline to sell a fairly hot bike to someone who didn't have the experience to satisfy her that he'd be safe on it.

But, like you say, they represent a vanishing breed.

Some places *coughcough*Fry's Electronics*coughcough* I don't even bother setting foot, unless I already know the product backwards and forwards, and exactly where in the store they keep it...

Everybody chill

I don't know how old you are but why not just rent the camera - well I never really understood why anybody buys a camera unless they're going to use it often (IE eng shooting or similar) and have the cam pay for itself.

All you really need to learn is a cheap 1 chipper - I mean you buy the DVX, it's probably just going to end up sitting around most of the time, maybe get used once a month.

I dunno, maybe I'm just a bitter mofo

i woke up this morning knowing it was christmas and knowing i would have a dvx100a. as i rush to the living room to check it out theres a canon gl2 sitting there with a wide angle, telephoto , and lots of accesories for the GL2. i was really bummed and told my mom cuase i put down on a list specificly what i wanted and she said that they no longer make the dvx100a so she got me a gl2 instead. im going to return the gl2 but im super bummed they dont sell the dvx100a anymore

LOL that sucks man.

I know the feeling. A couple of years ago I asked for a Sony Vx2000 and my mom got me a crappy digital camera.

You should still thank her for it though, it is a pretty decent camera.

Monte, renting is good but NOT cost effective. They rent for 200bucks a day in Toronto.

Too expensive to have to just play with and man, I've learned SO much from just playing....

SAD MAX, I'm sure you're an honest guy but after 15 years of dealing with people in camera shops, all I can say is there must be a particular place in hell for those liars.

i dont know, i cant find any stock of the 100a except some sketchy deals on ebay.
p.s. does this look ligit? http://cgi.ebay.com/Panasonic-AG-DVX100B-MiniDV-Camcorder-w-Accessory-KIT_W0QQitemZ7574282080QQcategoryZ20332QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Chris - I'm not gonna get into the whole argument going on here other than to tell you to stay away from this source on ebay. Look at the location - Brooklyn - it's just an eBay storefront for one of the Brooklyn scumbags.

Oh, give the kid a break.

Seriously. He's only 16 and he gets all worked up and doesn't get what he wants for Christmas, looks for a little sympathy and all he finds is people bashing him for being greedy. If someone promised you a free dvx wouldn't you take it? Just because we're not all rich doesn't mean we have to bash on those who are.

I may accuse people of being spoiled, but only because I wish I were myself.

Knock it off guys - The guy says he is disappointed he got the wrong camera and you jump all over him. Why.. Only because it's an expensive gift! If he wanted a DVD and showed disappointment for getting the wrong movie it would be a whole other story.

The bad guy here is the sleazy salesman who conned his mom into thinking the GL was better - Clearly did not sell the DVX.

Some people get big expensive gifts - That does not make them monsters!

i walked up to her bed and was like merry christmas! and she smiled and she was like do u like it and i was like, well idk if u know but thats not the camera i asked for. and she said she understood but the salesman told her it was just as good and then i sat her down and explained the difference and told her about 24p and everything and she kinda understood it, then she was fine with it and realized she got scammed when i showed her the real price of a gl2
