GH4 upscale HD stuff for 4K...

If you're going to up-res 1080 footage to 4K, it makes sense to start with a camera that at least resolves enough detail to get close to 1080 lines. When I compare my GH4, C100 & GH2 files on a 1080 timeline, they're much closer than one would think they'd be. Some advice, sell that T3i and get a G6, used GH2 or similar. Then you can apply your practice of 1080 for CU's, shallow DOF, etc. The sensor in the Canon Tx series needs to be put out of it's misery for good, IMHO.

Ha! yeah, true. when my 4k screen arrives, I will be able to SEE FOR CERTAIN if this ideas works at all or just a goofy idea. :)

er... did any of you go to that link and look at the pictures?

well, I'd like some other's visual feedback confirmation. to me, doesn't look as out of place as I was expecting, but I am not a good camera guy. I'm guessing if I'd made it a "guess which is which" and graded it decently, most could not tell.... validating my theory?

BIG diffence in the tools used to scale, so no blanket statement can work

Use a kit lens on a DSLR going to h.264 with FCP7 / Avid MC? hd->4K will look pretty crappy
Use Zeiss or Angenieux lens on a FS100 going to an external recoder uncompressed with a Quantel Pablo, Nucoda FIlmMaster, SGO Mystika or Discreet Flame and tweak setting on every shot? HD->4K can be transparent

Noise reduction and sharpening filters also come into play in upscaling, and again the big boy toys do this very well, the more accessible tools are just not in the same league

But the best HD->4K is very good indeed, but it's also not cheap to buy any top line kit and learn to use it -or- to hire a suite with an experienced artist and afford the time to do the best work tho, best left for a distb to pay for and get it done right, but again that's assuming the source to be upscaled is somewhere in the ballpark of optimal before starting!
