If it makes you guys feel any better, being super late with my submission didn't make it any better. It just took me forever to put the pieces together. Things got missed or done only half-a**ed and are still far from perfect. I think in a few weeks once I've had time to rest I might go back and give it a Lucas Treatment :)

I think one of the things I've learned so far in this competition is that dramas need a resting period after the initial edit. Perspective is always useful, but I think it's a bigger issue for a drama.

I agree whole-heartedly.

What I've learned is this.

A camera, a mic, a tripod, a fluid head, lighting, a 35 mm adapter, lenses, and a triple monitor editing system does not nessecarily make a good film.

Oh, and the other thing I learned.

I wasted like 8 grand on a hobby i suck ass at :(

Anyone know when people can start posting screenshots and displaying their promotional websites for their films?

The only way to get good is to do and do again.

Agreed! You realy do learn by doing and screwing it up... but dude, 8 GRAND???? I hope that wasn't spent on just this short film. If that's what it cost you to get a computer for editing and all, then it was WELL worth it, because then just like Aram said. you can now always do it again, and again, and again.... :)

Anyone who's stressed out about not having their film perfect, shouldn't feel alone. Though we were technically "done" with the film prior to the deadline, I couldn't render it without taking it apart in pieces & tracks at a time ... try & import those into another master project, etc.

Of course, it's not till it was FULLY rendered that I was able to step back & view it in fluid form (vs. key framing through frame by frame, waiting for the preview window to process & catch up on each one) ... and of course, that was AFTER uploading it, as it was already by the skin of our teeth for the second deadline (or was that third?).

All that to say, I realized we still had in some Mickey Mouse titles that we were playing with in Live Type, vs. the pro & clean polished ones we intended, some of the tracks eroneously just POP in, vs. fading like they're supposed to (some setting in Vegas killed all the beginning fades/transitions of each clip! - didn't realize until too late), and there's an area of our audio track that accidentally cross faded a little too early, drowning out a line.

At least we've got the saving grace of being able to have you guys watch the further polished & extended cut after the fact.

Yeah, I hear you Norm. It's brutal trying to hit a deadline, then watching all the issues you missed lol. But, I am sure we were all in the same position to some extent. It's a level playing field, and should be interesting to watch all the films.

In the Zombie fest there was really some nice shorts done . Basic story telling , no fancy effects etc .
So this is what I attempted this time , Ok the truth is I am useless at effects and CGI stuff and that is why a simple story was told .

I find it funny that we are hard on ourselves for the little mistakes we make .
I watched a Horror/thriller where a deer runs into the side of the car , smashing the drivers window . A few moments later when they drive off , there is the window in one piece . SOOO if they can get away with it so can we . well sometimes..lol

My biggest fault is not always framing right in the first place and I realized I really need a monitor to view things . Even a laptop would of done i guess ..AAhh but next time .

Edit

Not sure why but but kicked off again ....had to re sign in .

we had a little tv on set, it looked a whole lot better than the little lcd. it really helped with the motivation. cant wait to see the films.

Number 1 thing I learned... Ya got to organize the hell out of your file sturcture if you are doing effects shots.

It got to the point where I couldn't find anything I wanted. I must have done 20-30 fx shots, with multiple layered rendered composites.

And Just yesterday I get my Quad! Would have made rendering go much faster, thus I could have spent more time tweaking.. oh well.

Now I don't know which files I can keep and toss.. so many files.. hundreds... ack!

Good grief! Busy busy.

I threw out the original story I was going to do. Way to ambitious for the time frame involved. We ended up doing something a lot smaller and even that ended up being a bit heavy effects-wise so we scaled back the effects for that.

And THEN, we still didn't get everything right. But it was definitely a learning experience and that's what these contests are about for me. At least I made this one. My Zombie flick is still unfinished :embarasse

I hear ya Bena. I learned about the organizing thing a while back. Now I story board every effects shot, then make a folder for each shot and in that folder a folder for every individual layer neded to composite. I've got quite a tree up here. Now I need to dump them to an external drive. Uugh!

Well, not too change the subject too much. I updated the list again! Got hiro's title up there! On a side note: On out short we tried to keep it as minimal in effects as possible and focus more on story structure, and characters. We'll see if it worked ;)

Ours, I believe, is VERY character driven ... though there are effects/stunts that were part of the story in the end, the first 2/3+ is all character ... kind of a stair step progression.
