Upgrading to HVX2000 - what do I need?

Hi I'm a long time DVX100AE user - love it.

I have a powerful PC that runs Media Studio Pro, as well as After Effects etc. I also have a powerful laptop running DVRACK that I use for recording (bypassing tape etc). I can do almost anything with this setup.

Now I'm looking at upgrading to HVX200 and I feel like I'm starting all over again. The price in the uk is about £3000 (unless anyone knows better).

If I use HVX200 in it's DVCPRO-HD format - (which would be the reason to upgrade) then does anyone know what I'll need to handle all the post work?

Does latest MediaStudio Pro support DVCPRO?
Does DVRACK work with it - thus I won't need P2?

As an aside if I take the output from the Firewire port (like I do with DVX100) and record straight to laptop, then will that actually just be SD so defeating the point?

Many questions. Hope someone can suggest a workflow for this camera.

Regards

Kevin

No, MediaStudio Pro 8 (the latest version) has no support for DVCPro, though I have submitted a request for support in future versions. You should be able to use Cineform or Raylight with it however.

I have started using Canopus Edius 4 Broadcast, but I'm still more comfortable with MediaStudio.

The current version of DV Rack does not support the HVX200 either. You need to upgrade to DV Rack 2.0 HD, which is just around the corner. If you get the HDV Powerpak now, you'll save some money because you will be eligible for a free upgrade to DV Rack HD.

THoff - thanks.

Do you know if the firewire output from the HVX200 will give DVRACK 2 an HD Image or will it be SD?

If HD then that means I won't need P2 if shooting in a studio environment.

If you are recording SD DV, then you can use your existing DV Rack.

If you want to record HD, then you need DV Rack HD. It supports all the 720 and 1080 recording modes of the HVX, except for the "native" modes in which the HVX doesn't send any data to the DV port.

Native mode is really intended for recording on P2 media -- in native mode, the duplicate frames that would have to be removed using pulldown are simply never recorded.

When recording the DV port output from a non-native recording mode, DV Rack HD will look at the flags on each frame to determine whether it's a duplicate frame, and drop them automatically so you don't need to do your own pulldown, and getting you the same space-saving benefit of native mode.
