UPDATE! New G-LOG Profiles Version 1.1

Postmaster

Dark Side of the Camera
Fist of all: Thanks to all for that positive feedback and all the brave folks who tried my G-Log profiles. After gaining more understanding what the “color depth” actually does, here are the new profiles for G-Log (1.1).

“Color Depth” is quite misleading, since most guys think, it has to do with color saturation (I´m also guilty of that mistake).
That´s not the case as anyone with a vector scope can see – it should be called “Color Brightness” or better “Color Gama” cause that´s what it does.

The next confusing thing is, that the numbers are somewhat backwards.
Smaller numbers make colors brighter and higher numbers make colors darker.

So If you want to keep red from clipping, you have to dial it all the way up.

As before,
G-LOG A: Looks deep into shadows
G-LOG B: Is a bit more on the conservative side.

G-LOG A 1.1:
Black Level: +15
Gamma Standard
Black Gamma: middle, +7
Knee: 80, -2
Color Mode: ITO709, +8
Color Level -2
Color Phase -7
Color Depth: R+6, G 0, B+6, C+5, M+6, Y+5
WB-Shift: LB-5, CC+2
Detail -6

Make sure you set your highlights between 85 and 90 IRE on G-LOG A.

G-LOG B 1.1:
Black Level: +11
Gamma Cinematone1
Black Gamma: High, +7
Knee: 90, +2
Color Mode: Cinematone2, +8
Color Level -2
Color Phase -7
Color Depth: R+6, G +2, B+6, C+5, M+6, Y+5
WB-Shift: LB-5, CC+2
Detail -6

Cheers Frank!

Seems to be quite a change from your previous settings.
And for the record I used those constantly, GLog B is my
go to currently. With some interest in testing your K-Tone
tonight.

Definitely the problems with red especially in skin tones are from
color depth like I've mentioned in regards to Able Cines in another
post.

Looking forward to testing these in the field tomorrow.

G-LOG B 1.1:
Black Level: +11
Gamma Cinematone1
Black Gamma: High, +7
lack Gamma: middle, +7

Knee: 90, +2
Color Mode: Cinematone2, +8
Color Level -2
Color Phase -7
Color Depth: R+6, G +2, B+6, C+5, M+6, Y+5
WB-Shift: LB-5, CC+2
Detail -6

I'm confused.

I'm confused.

His first post stated

"lack Gamma: middle, +7"
(Glog-A)

His second was

"Black Gamma: High, +7
lack Gamma: middle, +7"

I'm just guessing he copy and pasted Glog-A and made the modifications
to it and forgot to remove 'lack Gamma: middle, +7' and meant to only
post Black Gamma: High, +7.

I'll wait for confirmation however this is my theory.

Theory hereby officially confirmed ;-)

It was a copy/paste problem, I fixed it.

Frank, I assume the workflow with your G-log profile requires using some LUT - with the free LUT Buddy not available for Vegas Pro, what would you suggest to use ?

You don´t NEED an LUT, it´s just a bit more convenient.
I´m not too deep into Vegas, but I guess you always can make a curve to your taste and save it as a preset.
Actually that´s what I do in Premiere to get a starting point, and than dial in my levels and color.

I only use a LUT for the K-Tone profile, since that involves not only a simple curve but some fine tuning in the hue/saturation settings.

Great job again. Your last G-Log worked good for me. I actually shot every job on it :) so thx.
I will test these to.

Already set it on my camera.
First think i notice is there the ''white' highlights are red. I don't know nothing, but after reading your blog I suggest the reds should be less because of high numbers.
Isn't it better the highlights are getting more green just like your last settings??

It reacts a bit different than the old G-LOG, but a manual WB should take care of that.
Everything else you can easily dial in in post.

And of course you can still use the 1.0 version if you like that better.

Those profiles are no religion, more a starting point - I encourage everyone to play around with those settings
to get a better understanding what they do and modify them to your taste and need.

best, Frank

Frank,

I have just began my journey into the world of LUTs using RedGiants LUTBuddy. Any chance you could share your reverse LUT for these Glog settings? I really liked the way your footage responded to the stuff you shot of the making of the dolly the other day...

And thanks for sharing your picture profiles!

Best,
Arthur

Filming a TV pilot today with either G-Log A or Kodachrome, depending on which one the director / colorist likes more, will post up some results!
