HPX250: Update available

It's a one-press button that "locks" focus in extremely quickly. I haven't compared to see if there are any general, full-time autofocus differences, but the one-tough "turbo" autofocus is an excellent improvement. I got a chance to test that at NAB and it really worked well.

Well, I updated the firmware, and the display shows that I have v 10.36-00-0.00, which is correct.

However there is no noticeable change in either the focus assist or push-to-focus. I went back to the document on the site to read the instructions and there isn't an English version, and my mastery of Asian languages is lacking.. Could someone point me to an English language instruction - not for downloading or installing, I've apparently done that correctly - I need to find out how to activate these functions, or why they aren't working in my camera - Thanks...

You need to enable Focus In Red:

1. Go to SW MODE menu and change FOCUS ASSIST to IN RED.
2. Exit menu.
3. Press FOCUS ASSIST to toggle Red Focus on and off.

Unless you downloaded the PDF with the updated section of the manual, you'd have to dig through the menus since the default is to keep the behavior as the camera shipped (Focus Assist magnifies).

I do wish Panasonic would make a complete Part 2 of the manual available for download rather than just the pages of the section where Focus Assist is discussed.

The last time I checked Part 2 had not been updated with the new information for the Focus In Red feature introduced in the firmware update.

I just received the cam yesterday. Have been playing with it. My immediate concern is the focus assist. Correct me if I'm wrong, it appears that I can't perform this function while recording. I'm used to 2/3" cam. I shoot a lot of wildlife with the HA25x16.5 lens and able to track the animal easily and need no focus assist whatsoever. There are situations where I can't bring the 2/3" cam due to its enormous size on some rough remote locations. Will this update let me zoom in while recording? So far it appears to be behaving similar to a Canon 5DM2 where I can't zoom in the image during recording. Only when I pause it is possible. Will be on remote location soon and any insights will help to plan out additional crew members to carry the cams vs. doing it 1-man.

That is correct. Unfortunately, the expanded focus assist is not available during record. The outline in red/white function is, however.

Okay, I'm stupid.

I'm trying out this "FOCUS in RED" on my new 250 and I dunno. What am I doing wrong? All I'm getting is a red border around the viewfinder. It's there if things are in focus, it's there if things are out of focus. Can someone explain to me wherein lies the "focus assist" part?

If you zoom in on your subject you will see the highlights turn red as you manually focus on it.. The red edge is just to confirm that you are in the red focus mode. It works a treat.

If you're hand holding the movement of the camera will not show the red sometimes if it's moving enough.
