up-rezzing to HD

I've heard that people do it--up-rez SD footage to HD--but I'm not really sure what that entails. Can this be done on my computer? Or is this a very complicated process only achievable by a high-end post-production house. And can anyone really tell the difference between up-rezzed SD and true HD? I mean, side-by-side, I'm sure the up-rez footage has got to have less resolution than true HD. But are you getting something comparable to HD so that one could actually say "this is an HD television program" (even though it was shot SD and up-rezzed). Thanks for any enlightenment.

uprezzing to HD can be done with vdub (virtual dub) and i think even in adobe premier. (im also sure there are other apps, but VDUB is the only one i have done it in) In virtual dub you can add the rendered DV AVI file and then output it to a chosen Rez, which in your cause would prolly be 1080* Also, i just noticed in premier the other day that when your outputting your avi or frameserving it, it gives you the option to pick the rez. Hopefully that helps somewhat. If you need links to VDUB or "VDUBMOD" you can find the free download links at http://www.videohelp.com

I just purchased this pug in for premiere..... simple enough to use... result seems pretty good. I dont really have necessity for HD projects right now as anything I am outputing is to sd DVD. But I am doing some upressing of letterbox footage to full 16:9 and the results have been good.

Concerning uprezzing from SD to HD, I've read in posts in this forum that shooting with an anamorphic (16:9) lens adapter on the DVX would be suitable to produce HD equavalent footage. Can any of you confirm this? Thanks.

well yeah it would look nice, but its still not going to be equal to the quality true HD. (a lot of "HD" nature shows and things on "IFC IN HD" are uprezzed. Ive seen several of the IFC-HD shows shot on a dvx with the adapter)

I guess one of the differences between hd and sd is DVX 4:1:1 colour, HD 4:2:2 - 4:4:4........ you cant magically create that through upres. That said Im getting some good results with the redgiant software. Most of the testing I have done is to add letterbox to 4:3 and then upres to true 16:9 the same as Disjecta does with photozoom. Results have been very good so far, with a minimum time requirement.

When I purchased the plugin I didnt really purchase for the HD aspect more for the process I explained above, I dont have an output method right now for true HD anyway.

Take a look at this, I've gotten some good results with it. You can download the demo:

Hey Dsjecta, I'm gonna try out this cool sounding plug in! My question is: Red Giant says on their website that the footage must be progressive for the plug-in to work. Does that mean the timeline on which you apply the effect must be a 24P timeline (as opposed to a 29.97 timeline with DVX 24P footage on it)? Cheers!

You need 24p or 24pa footage. In Premiere Pro the software automatically detects pulldown and removes it when you bring progressive footage into a 24 frame timeline. You cannot edit 30p in a 24 frame timeline and the software won't work with 50i or 60i footage or a 29.97 timeline.

Note that converting 4:3 aspect to 16:9 aspect display is not uprezzing. Uprezzing to HD involves enhancing pixel resolution as well as the aspect conversion.

Using an anamorphic adapter DOES NOT provide HD quality it converts 4:3 to 16:9 widescreen by optically altering the image to increase the width of the viewing angle on a 4:3 chip set. The video is still 720 x 480 pixel resolution DV quality not 1080 x 720, 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 HD quality.

I have upconverted several clips totaling about 40 mins of DV footage to 1280 x 720 HD for inclusion with footage shot with a Varicam using the Instand HD. It works suprisingly well on properly exposed well lit footage.

Good shooting

Best way to uprez is via hardware not software

Get an aja konal lh card and you will be amazed, forget about those plugins. they do no justice.

hey Disjecta, do you have any examples of your results with RedGiant's InstandHD plug-in? Also, if I uprez to 1080, will the resolution be noticabely better, even on an SD set?

yup, in a previous post....pretty crude test (pages 1 and 2 of the thread) but you can get the idea. It will never approach real HD and, to be honest, I only see its application being useful if you want to use SD in and HD project. It's not going to give you pixels that are not there.

So there are fundamental difference in the color space? It's not just about the resolution? I have an FX1 but I don't have the hardware needed to edit effectively in HD :(, so I usually just shoot HDV and then downcorvert it it SD. Would there be a difference at all if I had just shoot SD and capture the footage that way? Or do I gain somekind of quality boost by shooting HDV and then downcoverting?

Disjecta makea good point that you can't manufacture more pixels than you have in you base footage, DV @ 720 X 480. But Instant HD or the KONA Card process the pixels to minimize the degredation when the image is scaled to 1080 X 720 for example.
