SHORT: "UNLOCKED" Dir. by Joss Whedon

My second opportunity to shoot for Joss Whedon was an awareness piece for Planned Parenthood. We shot across three days because of our multiple locations, which ended up being a fairly relaxed schedule compared to what I'm used to.

We used two Alexa Minis, shooting at framerates up to 200 fps depending on the scene. I used mostly Master Primes from 14mm to 75mm shooting T2 or under, plus Ultra Primes 100 and 135 as needed. We also carried the Alura 45-250 for closeup work, and I used the little Duclos Tokina conversion 11-16 for the final shot. Filtration when used was Black Diffusion FX.

Lighting was my usual combination of sources...small tungsten, HMI up to M40, Litemats, Cineo/Chimera combo.

Excellent piece. Makes it look so easy and simple. But purely visual storytelling is anything but easy.

Wonderful lighting, wonderful camera work. You should be proud of this one for sure.

Whole-heartedly agree with Bruce. My favorite kind of powerful "script" - it lets the visuals tell the story. Love the whole concept (reverse slo-mo) & some very nice subtle edits which really help to drive the message home. As always, thanks for sharing. That last shot makes me want the 11-16 so thanks for that too.

Beautiful work as always. Pretty impressive, that little 11-16 still delivers, even among the other amazing lenses you carried.

I'm remembering an old mentor of mine from some years ago after hearing me express concerns about just how competitive this industry is, saying, "There is always room at the top." This work is crystalline evidence of that. If a person is truly skilled in practicing their craft and creativity, there's always a place for them at the top industry.

An essential aspect of that craft that I see on display here is the seamless unification of cinematography technique with the story and its intention. Something that seems to receive a lot of lip service but is rarely actually accomplished - even more rare for it to be accomplished as effectively as evidenced here. Very inspiring.

Continue to look forward to your future work.
