Universal quick release assembly?

What you need is one in the "Systemic" line, which has a modular approach. I honestly didn't realize mine was of that line until I emailed Gitzo and learned the insert I needed to convert it to bowl mount. Very well thought out. Both my tripods are years old and I could barely afford them then. I'm sure the newer ones are nicer, but there's years of life left in mine, so I'll just live with a bit of aggravation now and then.

One thing I love about the Gitzos is their ability to put the legs virtually straight out, so I can get the camera just a few inches above the ground.

Ciao,

Oh! Thanks Simon. I dug a little deeper on reading your post, and it seems that the LSV models simply come with the level, as opposed to without. The GT3531S is a Systematic model (that's what the "S" stands for), so it should accept the GS5121LVL levelling base.

Yslee,

You may not need the leveling base if your head is a bowl mount. My Libec HS22DV will level just with the bowl adapter on the tripod. The adapter I needed was the GS5320V75.

Cheers,

Which RRS quick release clamp can I use with the Acratech 2173 plate? RRS has a warning about using non-RRS plates with their clamps.

Also I noticed on the lever clamps that they say they're not threaded. How do I attach the clamp to my existing plates (tripod, modo stead, etc)?

Hey Mike, to be safe, use the clamps with the screw knobs.

I'm going to assume you need to attach the QR platform to an existing setup that has the 1/4" UNC connector. If so, you'll need the platforms with the screw thread. Kirk makes their Universal Clamps with either a 1/4" or 3/8" thread (3/8" can be adapted to 1/4"). See this link: http://www.kirkphoto.com/QR_Universal.html

Yeah, the problem is that they're not lever and don't lock. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the little knobs. If they come loose the camera is history. And I plan on using it on a car mount for an upcoming project or two. Wouldn't be good. Definitely need something really secure.

There're a couple of the lever clamps that have a screw thread. That does lock you into RRS plates and the newer Kirk plates though.

My pic in the first page shows a rrs lever clamp, it has a thread and then u just buy the screwthread to suit and use some
thread locker.

I would STRONGLY suggest to go the lever clamp route, it's a thing of beauty. You can flip your camera from horizontal to vertical in a couple seconds flat.
