Howdy,

Please take a moment to look at these examples...

Settings:
1080 30p
Default Shutter
Default Scene File 1

(Outdoor I used NR, 0db gain, open iris)

HMC-150 Screen Grabs:

http://www.berrygoodvideo.com/offsite/HMC150_p3.png

I also uploaded a 2 second ProRes (1080 30p) file for those of you who are able to play it http://www.berrygoodvideo.com/offsite/Test.mov (You will need to download the clip to play it)

I'm assuming my terrible results are my fault. I must be doing something wrong in order to get these kind of images out of this camera. At least that's what I hope...

I realize in the 3rd HMC-150 example the image is far too dark. But I don't see how that should introduce so much artifacting.

So please enlighten me fellow DVX users! What am I doing wrong? Because so far I haven't shot anything that looks good enough on my 52" that I would feel comfortable showing a bride.

Why did you remove the A1 comparison shots? ;)

For quick look I'd say: Underexposed and out of focus. And motion blurring does the rest.

Hmm...disappointing results to say the least. Like pailes said, was everything in focus?

And these are all in PH mode? They look very low res.

Jordan, I'm assuming you've looked at your clips directly from the camera to your 52 incher via HDMI?

If the quality is good there, I'm wondering if you're losing something in the transcode?

PH Mode? Yes

As far as focus... I couldn't tell you if they were spot on. If it's possible i always zoom in and get focus on my subject. The point is all of my shots look like this. There definitely isn't motion blur that I can see in any of those shots.

Mr. Gates I've checked and they look the same. But I'll look one more time as soon as I get home.

Even if each of thoe shots were terribly out of focus that doesn't justify anything. Something out of focus shouldn't have those many compression artifacts.

I'll do a test as soon as I get home. I will say I did shoot a Love Story in Cine-D scene file I believe it was and it doesn't have the bloshyness (shot outdoor).

what palies and HumanTyphoon said. and it does look like it was shot at a lower resolution .HE mode.
Is the sharpness all the way up +7?

I'm 100% sure. The main giveaway is that both cameras produced the same results.

I like b press for low light but i havent tried it as my normal setting.

Tonight ill do an extensive test on sc1.

I've never shot the camera in anything other than PH mode. The shapness is 0 as the default for Scene file 1. The sharpness isnt as big of an issue here though.

i get the same results in all my shots. i definitely think its the camera. i have shot in low light, outside clear sunny day, indoors artificial light, tried different scene files and settings and i still get the same thing. i keep telling myself that its probably something i'm doing. but if you look at this thread they were having the same problem.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=157618

my footage does not look like anything people have been posting here. when i look at some of this stuff posted here its like im shooting on a little flip video digital recorder and their using a red lol.

hope that thread helps.

If you havent read it before make sure you read the whole thread ,I was having some issues to , but then I reinitialized ( reset ) my camera .and it worked

yeah i posted that link so jordan can have a look through it and see if anything there will help him out. was it the same kind of issue, really grain picture or was it something else that you were having. im going to try and give it a reset later today when i get back home and see if that helps. its really bad outside, i was hoping i can take some clips and test it out. i guess im shooting indoors.

thanks for the tip Everts

Hi Jordan,

Is it possible that the gain was not locked down? I know you said gain was 0, but I'm just wondering if the gain was in auto, it try to gain up as you used the ND filter or closed down the iris.

Your frame grabs are nothing like the footage you saw from my cameras. Do some testing and see if you can reproduce the same poor quality images before you change anything. Then check to see if the gain is in auto. Just an idea. If you are still experiencing problems, come on down to Tulsa and we can do further testing.

thanks for the clips Everts. what settings did you use for WarappaKreek. edges were nice and sharp and overall had a clean picture. obviously there was all that vimeo compression but still a clean video.

thanks

What is the lens aperture (f stop). Is it wide open or closed down?

Also, can you make a test with the camera on a tripod and a non moving object. Then zoom in and use the focus assists.

With HD, you really need to be in focus. If not, you'll see it more easily than in SD.

You are showing us hand held pictures (probably) with moving subjects. In these cases, you can get motion blur from the subject or from the cameraman (because 1/50 or 1/60 of a second is slow and easy to get motion blur, like in photography), small depth of field, etc.

Also, do you have the OIS on?

You can also try to set higher the Detail level and V detail. In this case, you can higher a little bit the detail coring to reduce noise.

And you can try to choose a higher shutter for outside shots.

@Mark - Thank you! I'm about to start some extensive testing and I will report back as soon as possible. I refuse to come back to Tulsa until you guys have a blog though ;)

@SPrimeau - The iris was open on all of the shots (Even in the indoor shot i believe). Focus and motion blur are not to blame here. I haven't been around that long but I know that's not the reason the images are coming out like this. OIS is on. This goes behind not having enough "detail". I will use a higher shutter for the glidecam shots... to improve the motion..

I'm going to be doing a lot of tests tonight and I really hope to get to the bottom of this. I have a wedding May 16th (SDE too) and 26th and I have to be able to deliver.
