Understanding Lenses

So, I saw that Phillip Bloom used a 35mm for his 50mm needs on his 7D shoot... I believe I have that right, but don't ridicule if I am off. I am just curious how to know the calculations... is a 50mm not really a 50mm on these cameras for video shoots? i wanted a 28mm, 50mm, and 135mm but now I am not sure what that actually means I need...

The 7D has a smaller sensor than the 5D.
The 5D is a full frame 35mm sensor, the 7D has an APS-C sized sensor (which is actualy closer to Academy 35mm film size).

There is a 1.6x crop factor when putting a full frame lens onto an APS-C sized sensor body.
So the 35mm that Phillip used have the field of view of a 56mm lens on a full frame camera.
