Under Water Housing

If you're not going deep, consider Epic's housing. www.epiccam.com. It's adequate for splash/wave protection and supposedly down to 30'. Mine hasn't been that deep, but I'd make a trial run without the camera first to test it. Make sure they know it's for an HVX, because the first one they sent me wasn't set up with the support rails in the right place. It's basic, but it's also doesn't cost as much as the camera like the others do.

I have an epic housing and have used it underwater on numerous surf trips. It's basic, but sturdy enough to be tossed around in the waves for a while. Set your auto focus/iris and you are ready to go. I would recommend it to anyone.

go to bhphotovideo.com and check out 'Equinox'....

I have an equinox pro pak 8 for my dvx and I know they make housing for several different cameras, and the quality is amazing.

Thanks for the tip on the epicam housing. Been searching for something to do underwater swimming angles and near-water sports stuff. This looks like the affordable solution.

That does look intresting, they should modify the website and have an HVX link.
I would be interested in putting a link to that on my website, anyone know the owner?
Thanks

They were very friendly -- I think the guy I talked to is Chris, but I'm not certain. Just call and ask, the owner will probably be the one answering the phone. This is no B&H mega-operation.

The epic cam looks great for surface shooting. Remember that underwater a flat port gives the effect of zooming in , and wide angle is usually critical underwater.

By flat port, you mean the flat glass of the housing which allows water to give it the magnification effect? The main thing I'm worried about this housing is not getting a vignette as I've seen them on their example clips. Should have mine in a week or two so I'll let everyone know.

I have the Ewa-Marine unit and will be using it this weekend for the first time. I will be shooting the opening to my horror fest entry with it. If you don't need it right away I will be able to show you some footage and give you a report.

I'll also, more than likely, sell it when I'm done with it.

Got my Epicam housing this week. Will be trying to shoot next weekend in a pool, but the outdoor season is getting a bit cool here in upstate NY. Anyway, I have tested it by just going to the backyard pool and plunging it in to see how it works...here's my initial take:

Fairly solid housing for the money. The latch band which locks the end cap in place feels a bit cheap...like a big hose clamp, but for the money it works as stated.
Controls are primitive with just the on/off plunger at the back end which is a bit of a jury rigged system, but it kind of works. (Most underwater housings have these, this one is just a bit more flimsy). The main thing is it is only a one trick pony so you can't reach the zoom/focus/iris, etc. I'm going to try to waterproof my HVX remote and see if that would be a better way to work it since it's hit and miss with the on/off switch.

The casing has a lot of air in it...so it's not easy to keep underwater without a weight system of some sort. I'm going to wrap a diving weight belt around it to see if I can get a neutral bouyancy to it.

So far it is what it has been slated to be...surface..shallow underwater housing at an affordable rate.

Hopefully I can show some footage after next weekend.

Under Water Housing

I am looking for a under water housing to use to shoot action sports, wakeboard, surf, ect.
Looking at speading around $500.00
any suggestions?
Thanks

IF you have a dvx100 or the HVX Ewa Marine makes a floppy bag that has access to iris controls, etc.

I bought one for the horrorfest shoot, but didn't get to use it. I should be using it in the next few weeks, so I can update a couple of people that want to know how it works.

From a waterproof standpoint it seems a bit scary, but I stuffed it full of paper towls (to test for leaks) and took it in my pool...no problems what soever.

They run about $550 us from B & H. (US)

There's also a hard case by another company. Do a search for Epic housing. I think that's what it is.

Please use the search feature. There are 6 threads that come up when using the search hardware section. I am mearging with most current.

First post I know. I've been just reading most of the time but since I just bought my hvx it's time to chat. Anyways, Sean at www.splwaterhousings.com makes some great custom housings. A bit expensive, $900-$1,200 but great quality. You get full control of zoom, record, focus, etc. I have had two housings built from him for my pd100a and pd150 for shooting bodyboard and surf footage.
