Uncompressed Capture Card for WinXP?

What capture card do I need for a Windows XP machine for use with the XH-A1 to capture uncompressed 4:2:2? Something cheap but stable.

What software do I use to capture/edit the footage?
Will Adobe onLocation CS3 work?
Can I then edit the footage in Vegas or Premiere Pro CS3?

Ok cool. This says SDI though. I thought only the XH-G1 supported SDI and that's why you pay twice the price for it.

It should because it says the analog component input is switchable between HD and SD signals.

Cheap 4:2:2 capture, but still tethered to a workstation and running an NLE. Great for studio, greenscreen work however.

NO, it says analog component YUV as well. I have the box sitting here on my desk.

"The highest qualith HD/SD switchable PCIe video card with SDI and analog connections"

For a $1,000 this thing RULES. The HDMI card everyone talks about is not even in the same league. (kind of like HV20 vs A1) They are both great, but one does a heck of lot more.

I'm looking for a tethered solution for green/blue screen studio work at 4:2:2 with the XH-A1.
If I can get it for $350 instead of $1000 there is more of a chance the boss will actually say yes.

So the question is, will this second card (the Intensity Pro) with analog capture at $350 do the job?

No... not without a converter from component to HDMI, and by then... you've spent almost $1,000 and still don't get the benefits of the higher end card. Not to mention workflow issues.

ALSO: this is not all there is to it. You need storage that's fast enough to capture uncrompressed 10bit 4:2:2 - we use a 5 disk array in RAID 0 via U320 SCSI and it works perfectly. AND a good computer ...

Good Luck

I'm still confused. Can I get 4:2:2 with this card and the XH-A1?
What about with the new Matrox RT.x2 card??

NO

and

YES... but WHY? It captures to mpeg2 based codec and is super expensive.

For the cost you could get the Extreme and 3-5 new drives to build a raid array with. Easy choice if you ask me.

I think you can even skip the RAID setup if you capture through the new Cineform 4:2:2 codec, or the upcoming Apple Prores. Won't be true UNCOMPRESSED (by definition, since its a codec) but should still supply very good quality...

Yes, this is true - BUT Now I have a question.

Would capturing to Cineform or Prores (or that Matrox Iframe) have adverse effects on pulling keys?

Then you need to do some more homework because you are wayyyy off.

The intensity/pro is HDMI only, which would require a converter of component to HDMI and you get none of the benefits of the HD Extreme which is a REAL HD Capture card.

Maybe try looking at the decklink site.

I am not sure, if all that is true..

At:

http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/techspecs/

... is written that Intensity Pro™ have component Analog Video Input ..

My question...

I have JVC PD-1 which have YUV ( SD ) output..

Can I capture that signal with Intensity Pro™ in 10bit resolution?

Would I need some special Editing programe for that ( Vegas or Premiere ), or I get Capturing program with Intensity Pro™?

Do I need very fast ( how fast? ) computer and RAID disk array??

Would that give me digi-beta quality picture ( if we forget chip-size and CMOS configuration)..

Thanks for answers!!!

I think the Intensity and Intensity Pro both capture in 8 bits.

I have it on good authority that you can capture 4.2.2 using the black magic intensity pro via a componant signal
Sdi is better in terms of its error correction over longer cable runs.
Your not shooting "Lord Of The Rings" so componant capture is fine just dont have the leads running longer than 5 metres.
The quality of the image will be equal if not better than capturing HDCAM from an F900
Rmember that HDCAM is 3.3.3 and the componant capture from the A1 is 4.2.2
Sure the f900 had better glass. But who cares the differance is only marginal
if its not going to theactrical world wide release.
I hope that clears a few things up!

it seems that the intensity pro can't capture 108024p!?
Maybe im wrong but it only says 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 720p50 and 720p59.94.

Maybe im wrong but it only says 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 720p50 and 720p59.94.

The Intensity card captures common HD standards such as 1080i and 720p. It can capture 24p carried over 60i, much like a DVX 24p (not advanced) can be captured in standard 29.97. It really isn't too difficult these days to extract 24p via reverse telecine and work with true 24p material if so desired.

Darkeyes: correction--HDCAM is 3:1:1 color, but to imply or say that A1 component output would equal an F900 is a tad bit unrealistic. The F900 has many more advantages:

Better lenses,
2/3" 2.2 Megapixel imager
Better latitude
True Progressive FIT CCD
Much less noise and better sensitivity

The list could go on and on, but just because HDCAM doesn't record 4:2:2 doesn't mean that a 1/3" cam with 4:2:2 output will automatically equal or beat an F900.

And then Ill add this in relation to the bluescreen/greenscreen. Ive been testing the A1 a lot recently with blue/green screen.

I tried many things, and the best results came when the lighting and screen were at the optimal level. For a recording situation (not live) the A1 in standard recording mode will give you a great key if youve taken the time to set up correctly. The biggest issue Ive had was spill. Keep the subject 10-15ft in front of the key then light your key 1-2 stops below the subject and make sure its perfectly even. If you cant currently do this then a Component capture isnt going to make the key better.
