unable to take off set up ring

Hi there,
I recently purchased an 82-72 mm set up ring for HVX for a shoot.

Shoot is done and went all well but I can't take the ring off. I have the matte box off and tried lots of times.

Mounting on was piece of cake but taking off has been a pain. I need it off for next shoot on Tuesday

Any help

I'd say to put the attachment back on and use leverage. I have to do this from time to time when I take something off and leave the ring on.... You can also use an oil wrench.. lol..

common thing, here's my trick.

with dry hands and a dry ring, grip it in equal intervals around the ring, evenly distributing pressure

gently twist off, not too much strength required if done right.

i had this same problem in the past and i found a great solution. there is a plumbing tool you can get at any home depot for like $3. it's a pair of pliers that look like a big claw. they are very slim and its easy to grasp just the ring and it comes off without a hitch. it scarrs you ring up a bit - but who cares?

have clients in the office, will take pics later tonight.

Another effective solution is to put on a household utility glove, press the palm of your gloved hand flat against the ring, and twist.

the first time i over-torqued my 82mm step ring i tried ALL these suggestions. rubber mit, glove, washed dry hand, sock, denim, cat (just kidding about that last one!) and none of them worked.

so i went to home depot, camera in hand to find a tool. this is what i found:

most of the tools i found that were big enough to grip the 82mm ring (channel locks, pipe wrench, oil filter tool, etc...), were pretty bulky and very clumsy. but this thing, being as narrow and finely milled as it is works beautifully! allows easy isolation of and equal grip tension on just the ring itself without risk of contacting the camera lens. it requires VERY little pressure to work but as mentioned before, it probably will scar the step ring edge a slight bit. but ive used it a half dozen or so times and it doesnt cause any functional damage

there is a wrench you can buy that is used to take oil filters off of cars. it works quite well and doesn't have any teeth that would potentially do damage to the ring itself.

in Australia we use the bottom of a thong for this problem (in Oz a thong is 1 of a set of flips flops- i know it has a different meaning in the USA)

go get that tool. you'll be back to happy in seconds!
- if youre afraid of damaging the ring, stretch a rubber band around it first.

I had to drink two gin and tonics before I was able to get my step down ring off successfully. I think that might be your problem.

Take a rubberized mouse pad lay it flat over the lens (not the front of the pad, but the other side) with the camera facing up, place your open hand over the lens, apply downward pressure with the the palm of your hand and rotate to loosen it. If you try to hoid the ring as you are applying pressure it distorts the ring and it will never come off that way. Good luck

I totally agree.

That gripping tool on the previous page for instance only has three contact points, two of which are spaced closely together -- that's bound to distort the ring into an oval, and the harder you squeeze the handle, the worse you make it. At least if you use your fingers you've got five points (and maybe your palm too) more or less around the circumference.

Thanks so much guys. I tried many ways until this one worked.

I put a bed sheet to cover the lens and then my brother used a plyer to hold the bottom of the adapter and a wrench to twist it counter clockwise. I had to hold on the camera really tight. It's off and no damage done

THANKS AGAIN. YOU GUYS ROCK:)

Now that its off I have one shoot to do and I am selling this camera. For those interested check market place
