Unable to import raw files into FCP

Hi,

So far I have never been able to import raw files into FCP, the only way I have done it is thru firewire and the camera.
I have downloaded the driver for p2 cards and still not able to bring the files into FCP, are there any settings that need to be changed in order for the cards to be recognized??

It is essential to give use specifics about your system.

p2 imports have been supported since 5.0.4 and we're at 6.0.5. Help us out.

And give us what computer hardware you are using. Also do you have FXFactory installed.

Finally what do you mean by importing "raw" files "thru firewire and the camera?"

Yes i do have effect factory installed, the only way I have been able to import the footage is with the camera and log and transfer.
what I can not import are the mxs files or raw files like a few people call them, I am kind of shocked that you use that word.

FCP doesnt work with "mxf files" directly it converts them to quicktime via log and transfer
 
Unless you have Raylight for the Mac, the mxf "raw" files cannot be imported directly into FCP.

Some NLEs on both platform support this, for example Premiere CS3 on a Mac.

FCP does not, but unwraps and rewraps the mxf files to QT upon log and transfer.

No quality loss occurs.

it is possible. but like i said "FCP doesnt work with "mxf files" directly" - not without other software (raylight) in the mix...
 
sorry to piggyback on this--

Raylight is an extremely tempting option, but I have a question:

If you are editing the mxf files directly, and put a filter on it, or say do some serious color correction, where does that data get saved? Not in the MXF file, correct? I guess what I'm asking is that the mxf files don't get altered when using raylight, right?
 
That is correct. Raylight does not alter the original MXF files in any way, it simply creates a new quicktime link file that can be dropped into the FCP timeline. This link file points back to the original data; as a matter of fact, once the link files have been created you don't need raylight installed to be able to use the link files.

BTW, virtually all editing programs work similarly in that any changes made are stored as commands in the editing programs project file or associated data files. When you render out to a new file, that's when the changes are permanently applied to the new video file.
