T2i UK people - Buy 550D-T2i in UK or USA?

Hi,

I'm thinking of picking up a 550d/t2i as a b-cam to my 5d for a few reasons, namely a) slow mo, b) second cam when needed, c) backup in case of 5d problems. Seems a no-brainer for me.

I see you can get one from Digital Rev for £555 and from RGB Photo at £675 (thou Digital Rev is foreign so you'll get import duties. Digital Rev actually have the 7D for £1000 which is tempting too.)

I'm going to the USA for SXSW, found out today, hurrah! I was thinking maybe I could pick up a t2i whilst out there to save some cash.

However the pound is pretty weak at the moment so I'm not seeing it as a huge advantage. B+H for example have the T2i at $800, which is getting close to Digital Rev's £550.

Therefore by buying in the states the main difference I'll save is essentially the import tax, which'll prob be about £100, over buying from Digital Rev, or from someone like RGB Photo which is full UK stock w/warranty. Also a T2i will probably have less sell on value over here than the 550D, simply because it's not the UK branded version.

Any UK guys have any advice on buying things from the states? As I said I'll be out there so no import tax etc but even then it doesn't seem that much cheaper to me, so I'm not seeing a huge advantage. Thought I'd see if anyone with more experience in this area has anything to suggest. I'm not sure if it's worth it or not.

Merci!
a x

Maybe you are better off buying just some extra lenses which are cheaper there then in EU ;)

worth noting that if you go to b&h store you will also be charged a local tax on top of that $800, cant remember how much it is but it was enough to make savings negligible

From wikipedia: "In New York City, total sales tax is 8.875%, which includes 0.375% charged for the service of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority."

I didn't get charged import duty on my 7D from DigitalRev. I think because they've got offices in the UK and the way trading works between the UK and China, the stated 17.5% tax is in lieu of an import tax.
