Sweet! This is seriously my new wallpaper. I'm sure there will be many questions... all of which I promise to answer creatively.

Nice

Nice

Excellent...

Nice work Jp, SteadiJay, and crew. I love the concept and the fluid motion. Jp your stuff keeps getting better. How much planning went into this video? How long did It take to shoot? How did you convince the girls to get dress so sexy? Was there a budget to work with? Did you rent the steadicam? If so, how much did it cost to rent for a day? I wish there was a little more light in some of the scenes, but with the steadicam moving around so much I can see how it would be hard to frame out the lights.

Great job guys..

Ok, ok, ok. I’ll answer…

We spent about a month planning, (gotta plan!); we came up with the rag-to-riches theme at the initial meet with the band. Scoured Manchester city centre for suitable locations. We went for lot’s of impact within location, (alley, toilets), because of budget reasons. Luckily Tom managed to secure the phoenix club, (Peter Kay’s phoenix nights were all recorded there), we wanted a cheesy working mans club for Greg’s downfall. Also Waldo the art director set up the bar scene with fake lines of coke, vodka bottles etc. Waldo couldn’t make the Phoenix club so I grabbed some balloons and slung them on-stage. Tom and myself knew we had to step-up production value so the month’s planning was really needed.

2-Days to shoot. I called everyone early morning both days 6am and 7am. So to allow extra time in case anything went wrong. I only usually do 2-takes maximum, (unless something goes horribly wrong, Woody Allen only does one! It works for him), I come from a theatre background and so love my blocking. I would rather spend 20mins working with the performers before each shot and rehearse once or twice before a take. Than get involved with an 8-1 ratio.

Tim from the Randoms provided the girls, (who were excellent), I explained what was needed from them and originally wanted to do a topless shot in the bedroom, (they did agree), but I decided against it to maximise airplay. They were told to bring sexy underwear and to be honest it was a difficult job keeping your mind on the work, (I tried to make them feel comfortable and warned everyone to be professional), they all enjoyed the experience and brought their boyfriends along to the screening at a local funky bar in Manchester, (Night and Day Café – Cheers guys), they all want to work with the team again and are helping the Randoms out at gigs being the Random Divas.

Tom and myself decided to pick the three best un-signed bands from Manchester. So we invested our time, my gear, Tom’s money, the bands threw some in too. We brought in the budget at £500. So we had to work on content and locations. We don’t want to get known for doing cheap music videos but looked at it as investing in our future together as a music production team. Most of it went onto the crew’s expenses
We tried to be fair to everyone and not take the piss.

Jason owns his own STEADICAM rig, he’s in debt up-to his eyeballs but is looking at the bigger picture, (as we all are), and we gave him a nominal fee. I will pass on some corporate work, future paid gigs, anything I can to help him out. I really enjoyed working with him and he is now a dedicated team member. For me keeping a tight happy team together is the key. If you have not got the money to pay someone. Treat them with respect; allow them to work on their craft instead of always dictating. Also, you’re appreciated by having wrap parties. They keep a happy family, happy.

Lighting, ummm. Due to circumstances in the past, I have had to light myself, (being let down at last minute, blah, blah), It’s my weak point. I was D.O.P on the days and I’m not bad in-camera just terrible with lights. I bounced and tried to look at weak points. I wasn’t creative enough with lighting in the dressing room set-up but Jason and myself tried everything to get more light into the room. It was so small we had to bounce light from outside, a massive headache with Jason’s shadow, (big rig’s STEADICAM); also the flat set-up was a bit dark. I’ve corrected them in the final DVD version.

So to sum-up. I wanted to be professional and creative. I like working most with performers and composition. My old D.O.P. has finished working on his past year projects and is returning to the team for the next set of videos. Phew! Thank God! :engel017:

I intend to put more effort into directing next time and we have some lovely stuff in the pipeline. It’s a bit of a success story for Tom and myself as since the shoot. Managers and Record Labels have seen the video and have contacted us to work with signed bands about to release new albums. I have struggled over the past three years getting anyone to watch anything I’ve done. I’ve had a pretty rough time with self-belief but rather than chucking it all in. I met Tom and went for it yet again. I just pray I can start to make a living from it. I am absolutely driven by the crazy life, all I want to do is carry on creating and maybe being able to buy some food for the Wife-to be, (3rd of Sep.) I can only say to everyone keep on working, people in this game love to talk about things, not many get off the arse and learn by their mistakes.

Thanks for the reply JP,

I'm in the same boat you are as far as making a music video for free to get labels to notice me. I'll probably end up spending some money on my shoot as well. The band is already signed, but if my music video is crap I'll just have keep trying. I also have been planning for the last 2 weeks and I'll be planning for another 3 until the shoot happens. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Hey, congrats on the new successes. I hope you do really well. You can’t beat getting paid for what you love doing.

Cheers walt your site/ stuff is very intersting looks like your doing well. Keep up the good work.

Kevin. Keep me posted I look forward to it. Hope everything goes well. I just keep playing the tracks untill things pop into my head. Don't get bogged down with the producing side try and get some help. I hope it works out for you. I find the best way to get better is to shoot. So nice one for taking the time to put something together rather than waiting for that knock on the door from Universal, (hold-on someones at the door, oh it's only the Gas man!)
