Two Scenes from "Refuge"

Back in August I started filming a short titled "refuge." but unfortunately we were never able to finish production. I dragged out the footage we did have and cut a few scenes together. Here's what I got, please tell me what you think.

refuge.

Thanks guys.

I liked the feel of the camera movement/editing. The acting was not bad either, wish I had friends willing to help who can also act.

I thought this was shot on HVX. No?

Anyways whens the finished product due?

Thanks,

It was all shot on a stock DVX, no room in the budget for an HVX yet. We might shoot a couple scenes that we didn't do the first time around this coming May, but right now it is all in the air.

I liked it. The acting wasn't great, but you did a nice job with the the fall. The only thing I noticed that took me out of it a little bit was that when the guys come across him later on, it really doesn't look like he fell that far, at least not far enough to knock someone out, unless they hit their head on a rock or something.

You made the fall look bigger through close-ups than the actual location allowed for, which was good. The problem was that you could see that branch he grabbed onto in the background of the shot where they come across him, and it looks like he did most of his falling horizontally. That's not inherently bad, but I think you'd need to have a shot of his heading hitting a rock or something to make his going unconscious believable.

the acting was just a little weak. you should maybe try to let them improvise a bit before you shoot to get warmed up.
the shooting was real nice I would like to see more of this movie

Thats for the criticism guys. It all helps. I agree about the fall, it doesn't really seem as big/hurtful as it needs to to work well within the short. The acting has to rest on my poor shoulders as a director. I much prefer making pretty images then directing actors.

Thanks!

I like your stuff. Tell me though, did you shoot to crop it in 2:35? stock lens?
I'm thinking of doing the same for next project stock lens-want to explore 2:35 composition more.... I would go for a widescreen adapter to get even more resolution but the tediousness issue just might get in the way of the type of look im going for- that and I can't even afford in the first place- if I had the money, would I get it? yes. Then again- there's the andromeda worth saving up for.

Thanks.

Yes, I shot with the stock lens in squeeze mode and then cropped to 2.35 (this is 2.4 actually) in post. It's the way I shoot all the time and for the large majority of small TV's my projects are destined for, it works beautifully. I would take latitude (like from the Andromeda) over pixel count any day. The small dynamic range of the DVX caused us some problems on set.

Not bad at all BennisHahn, the fall looked pretty good. But when the guys come up and say "I think I see him" it ends up he is right in front of them. It looks that way to me anyway.
