Two questions...

What media supports the RED ONE? Where should we write 4K uncompressed RAW? RAID or what?

And is it reel to purchase this camera without reservation?

All details will unfold the next few months... no new orders will be taken until next year (maybe March or April).

Jim,

- Do you think AutoFocus system will be implemented when B4 mount adaptor is available?

- Why is it that optical viewfinder is not implemented? is it a preferential or ....?

- For future display or viewfinder, please consider QD Vision (www.qdvision.com). They uses inorganic Quantum Dots for light emmision and organic material for elctrons transport. It's low manufacturing cost ,and have lifetime and brightness similar to Plasma Display. They currently have monochrome prototype, but R, G and B are also available.

No to autofocus B4 support.

We have a great alternative to an optical finder in Graeme's magic invention. And the cost of an optical finder is prohibitive on this model.

Thanks for the reply.

As ENG and sometime Documentary shooter, Auto Focus is quite an important feature. Could tell me why is AF system will not be implemented? Is it a cost reason or something else?

I'm not sure I know of a B4 mount auto-focus system... what am I forgetting?

Motion and auto-focus are difficult tricks with a large sensor.

I think maybe you should see the dynamic range we can deliver before asking for more...

Sony XD350 uses B4 and has AF system, I think.

So 2/3 inch sensor has easier time with AF system than full format sensor?

I did at IBC and I thought it was incredibly wide, but with multiple exposure, >100 dB could be easily achieved.

The advantage of a large sensor is shallow depth of field. Smaller sensors give an auto-focus system more "help" by innately keeping more in focus.

It is a moot point, though. RED ONE will not offer it.

Jim

I'm very grateful to you and the RED team for developing a camera that's really good and advance for the particular price point. The industry was stagnant, in terms of technology, for sometime while the still photography camera's tech' was moving in the same speed as the microprocessor industry. I'm just bringing up possibilities/points for future RED cameras, please don't take it wrong way.

If you have the time, please do consider QD Vision for future viewfinder and display. Contrast ratio is really high as it could do 1000 Cd/m^2 for max. brightness and it doesn't emit any light/photons when it's suppose to be 'black'.

As the camera is shooting RAW, you can "print out" two different exposure from the same sequence and combine them to create HDRI, as you would do with sitlls.

Two things.

1) You don't need to do that. The RAW image is already HDRI, just ouput a 12bit linear file and skip the middleman.

2) Multiple exposures would result in strange unuseable artifacts which would so significantly reduce the resolution and quality of the image that you might as well shoot DV.

Example: First half of your exposure will be 100 pixels offset of the last half of your exposure in a simple pan. Copy a 4k image in photoshop, set the second layer to 50% and offset it 100 pixels in any direction. Set its transfer mode to "luminance". Tell me if that's what you want all of your footage to look like.

Gavin, I agree with you on the 2nd point, especially when the subject is moving. Definitely, motion blur reduction algorithm is assumed to be implemented with this. Also with CMOS sensor, you could do non-destructive readout where you don't have to actually take multiple exposure in a frame.

It's a feature that can only be implemented either thru firmware or minor circuitry add-on. But as everybody point out, the trick is to get rid of the motion blur within one single frame.

Yeah, that's a good question, Brook!

That would be a great addition to REDCINE....
I think I deleted my post just before you replied.

The question had to do with creating 8-bit HDR output from REDCINE. Have the system develop the RAW at two exposures and create an HDR stream for use on narrow range displays.

I deleted the post considering that most of what would be achieved through this process can be achieved from the RAW data and careful curves.
