Two Linear Polas Working Great as a Vari-ND

I just tried my Schneider 5.65x5.65 linear pola and Schneider 4x4 linear pola and it works great as a variable ND. I can virtually turn the exposure to black on the LCD. I thought two linears wouldn't work but there you go.

Two linear polarizers work fine. But two circular ones won't. A circular polarizer is actually just a linear polarizer with a quarter-wave plate.

I got mine on eBay. $200 for the 5.65x5.65 and $50 for the 4x4. The 5.65's are sooooo expensive new.

Power.. that's a really nice looking mattebox.. who's it made by?

It's a Vocas MB-450, made in the Netherlands I think. I got it because it was the only matte box I could find that fits my Canon HJ21x7.5 HD lens. The 450 has four filter stages 1 x 5.56 square, 2 x 4x5.65 and 1 x 4x4, one of which is on the front and tilts to remove reflections. It also has small eyebrows which are controled by the red knobs on the side.

I think Vocas is in the top three MB manufacturers in the world. The build quality is impeccable, but with wings they cost around US$4K, a bit much for a 7D-only system.
