Two Days in and around Bryce Canyon with the AF-100

During spring break we went on a family vacation to Utah. The first stop was Bryce Canyon on the way to Zion. I have never been to Bryce before and boy am I glad I finally went there. A truly magnificent place. On the first day we arrived mid-day so the light wasn't great but I grabbed my AF-100 and went to town. It got better as the day closed.
I used every lens I owned on this shoot including a Canon 70-200 that was stuck at f4, but I needed the length.
On the second day my incredible wife Bridget helped me carry a homemade Igus slider and tripod down into the canyon, and that was truly incredible. I wouldn't have been able to solo this with the gear I wanted to bring but I knew that I had to take the slider with me. I don't have a lot of experience with the slider in the nature setting so this was a first for me. Its hard to shoot fast without sacrificing. A great experience, and one so different for me.

Wow, Erik, truly awesome! You really captured the hoodoos of Bryce!

I've never been there with snow- it adds a whole 'nother dimension to the colors and textures.

I think my fave shot is 2:21, but the whole thing just sings, the slider shots are great- and kudos to your wife for being the slider grip!!!

Glad you finally got this cut! Is a Zion vid next? Not as otherwordly as the hoodoos of Bryce, but I love it- it's so beautiful.

Thanks groveChuck!
When I first got to the canyon I was awe struck. The snow and the red rock just blew me away. Zion ended up being a bust. The weather changed for the worst and it rained and then snowed but mostly rained. I did get two nice pieces shot with the AF-100 on this trip. The other was at Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area in Arizona near Las Vegas Nevada. Not bad for vacation filming.
For some reason I just couldn't get the music I wanted then I saw Cowboys and Aliens and it hit me.
And yes I have the best grip n the world! Thats why I married her.

Yeah, I remember the Virgin River piece- haven't been there, maybe I can check it out someday! Shame about Zion.

Actually, in addition to the camera assist, it's hard to get family to give up the time and freedom for a thorough video shoot- so you're extra lucky there...(though I claimed best grip/wife a few years ago!!!)

Thanks for sharing! Oh, and why not go ahead and list all the glass you used? And any challenges in matching them in post?

loved it, especially the earlier shots when the light was up. The contrast between the rock, snow, plantation and sky was just great and the tracking shots just really up the anti in terms of production values. Well done my friend. Sparky

Beautiful work, Erik. Brings back memories of the 25 years I lived in Utah with many trips to Bryce and beyond. Surprised at the smoothness of the slow zooms - lever aided, zip ties or what?

Ohh. Should I tell him? Hmmm? OK. I keyframed the scale up about 105. Kinda cheating but it works great.

Beautiful.... just beautiful! I've said it before & I'll say it again, got to love the slider!

Thanks so much for the comment. The slider made this video in my opinion. My vision technically was all about using a portable slider in the canyon. I worked hard to get this home made POS to work and it did with flying colors! I knew it wouldn't be easy to hike with it but thats what the light weight Igus slider lets us do. Cinema camera moves on the go. Love it!
