TV Logic VFM-056 5.6" HD LCD Monitor Group Buy

What is the running time by using the AA battery bracket ?

I wish they had the alternative of a thin battery and bracket like DP6 has . The only matter that troubles me.

Well depends which AAs you put in I imagine. The LCD is listed as 9W max powerconsumption, so if you use 6 1.2v 2500mah NiMH AAs, it should be about 6*1.2v*2.5ah = 18WH / 9W = 2hrs . Seems like 1-2hrs would be a good estimate with 1hr being closer for Alkaline and 2hrs being closer for high capacity NiMH or lithium. I have two of these 45WH batteries I was planning on using ( http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Dual-12V-38...637049343?pt=US_Batteries&hash=item19c27b65ff ). They have worked great with my lilliput 7in HDMI monitor, giving 6hrs of life running velcro'd to the back of the monitor. Only problem is they use a connector with an internal diameter of 2.1mm and tvlogic uses 2.5mm, so I'm waiting on an adapter I ordered. Seems like they should last about 4-6 hrs on the TV Logic.

I'm actually thinking of getting more of those ebay batteries and powering all my camera and accessories from them, since they are so easy to run in parallel with a $1 ebay splitter, I could just plug in 4 of them and stack them on my rig to power the whole rig all day (eventually including a powered hdmi splitter, and wireless hdmi box transmitter after I get the proper voltage converter).

Latest from TV Logic distributor on battery brackets:

"Battery bracket for Panasonic AF-100 is not ready yet. Factory is still
waiting for the bracket from vendor.
I can bring (14) BB-056E for new canon 5D battery.."

This is a message from a TV Logic factory worker who is flying out to Burbank shortly.

Tvlogic guys prooved that they listen to their customers and try to adapt to their needs. So we could ask them if it's possible in the near future to release a bracket+slim batteries of their own in order to solve this.

Dino could you ask them please ?

If they do, they really need to have a battery level indicator and be higher capacity than 28WH, I couldnt stand older smallHD batteries for these reasons. Yes they were kinda low profile and sorta inexpensive, but I used them with the old DP1 because I worked with a few guys that owned them and every 2hrs their LCD would die in the middle of a take, which is even worse since the DP1 took 20sec to boot up and it was a pain figuring out if it was booting up or off since it used an on/off button rather than a switch. Oh yeah and the battery mount/bracket was a bit sloppy, definitely sometimes takes 2 hands and some pulling to insert and remove batteries. I imagine SmallHD must have fixed some of these issues by now, right? Looks like their new batteries may be a bit better.

Those ebay batteries I use are more than twice the capacity and 1/3 the price and a similar weight and have an accurate level indicator.

I bought the monitor a month ago. I haven't had time to really go through it, but it is extremely light, and has a great picture. Coming from mostly using a 10" high end CRT with a F900, this monitor seemed small to me at first, but it's growing on me. I've used it with both a HVX 200 and 7D with nice results. The SDI pass through is a great feature. If you need something light and feature rich, this is a good buy, although pricey. Just wish it was in the 7-8" range, but you can't have it all....

I just received my monitor and accessories from Filmtools today. They had some delay with shipping, but Daniel from the shipping department was kind enough to upgrade to Next Day Air for me for free ($70 vs $20 reg).
I have to say I am very impressed with the monitor and it looks MUCH better in person than in the photos. It looks almost like plastic/abs material in the photos, but in reality it feels much more metallic and similar to the SmallHD DP6.
I haven't had to chance to use it just yet, but the build quality is top notch.
It definitely was expensive for a young filmmaker like me, but it probably will last me a long time.
I paid around $1775 total with accessories and tax. Higher than what I hoped, but there aren't even any alternatives.

have to admit this sony battery is hideous and not too practical other than maybe leaving it on a table like that

Panasonic HVX200 type batteries are light and cheap. One battery runs the monitor for 5 hours or more. The last four that I bought were $8.00ea. from Amazon!

If the AA battery bracket can hold 6 x 2000mah Sanyo Eneloops, would that be considered a total of 12000mah?
or is the voltage on the AAs (1.2v) are much lower than (7.4v) so the conversion would make them much weaker?

More likely they are connected in series to meet the voltage input requirements of the monitor so it would be more accurate to think of them as 6 x 1.2v = 7.2v

Basically the batteries would be connected either in series to make them 7.2v@2000mah or parallel to make them 1.2v@12000mah. Either way you connect them they are ~14.4WH, since 7.2v x 2ah = 14.4WH and 1.2v * 12ah = 14.4WH .

What you care about when approximating battery life is Watt-Hours, voltage and amp-hours or milliamp-hours dont tell you much separately by themselves especially if the monitor accepts a range of voltages.

It can also get more complicated than this but this isnt a bad basic way to compare battery power sources.

Overall even though NiMH AAs are surprisingly high capacity these days (over 2500mah is common), it will be very tough for them to compete with modern Li-ion batteries. Li-ion will almost always be much smaller, lighter, and higher capacity. Seems a little silly to go with 6 NiMH AAs when you can get a smaller lighter Li-ion battery pack with 3x the capacity for so little. AAs seem like a bad option if only because replacing and charging 6 batteries every 2 hours seems like a lot more work than replacing and charging 1 battery every 6 hours.

+1 for those batteries - I got 4 of the the 98 WH version - one lasts almost a whole day of shooting on my TV Logic VFM-056.

The price is a joke, compared to my Anton Bauers that last about the same time

Yeah I thought about getting those 9800mah batteries since I'd really like to just power my rig all day off one battery if I can, but I'd hate not having the battery level indicator. Plus stacking smaller batteries as I sometimes do with my 45WH ebay batteries allows me to hot-swap and never power down for battery changes if I want.

Yeah, level indicator would be nice, but I always have at least one in reserve, so a empty battery can ruin only one take.
But actually I never wait lill they are empty, I swap them after 6 or 7 hrs, so I never run out of battery.
At that price you can buy a whole bunch of them for the price of one Anton Bauer of the same capacity, so it´s a no brainer for me.
