Tub Scene

This is the opening scene to my first film shot with the HVX.

The film is silent (no dialogue or effects) just music (although that hasn't been added yet).

I have played with the colors a bit in post and would love to know what you think of it so far.

Ok, despite falsely getting my hopes up by advertising a tub scene, here's my thoughts. Overall, it's a very neutral unstylized look--very crisp and clean. Not sure what you were aiming for here. Without seeing the complete film with music it's hard to judge the cutting, but it still seems like you could tighten it up. It felt like there was a little too much lead in time on some of the shots. Like when the girl sits up in the tub--maybe either snip a bit off the beginnning, so she's almost upright when you cut to her or possibly speed up the framerate a bit to really make her bolt upright.
 
What do you mean false advertising. There is a tub. At least I left out the naked girl in the subject. :)

Seriously, thanks for the feedback. I realize it's tough to take it out of context. The short is called "The Photographer" and is about a girl coming to terms with the death of her father.

The changes I made are pretty subtle but hopefully they reflect the mood of the film.

Wow Chris. That looks awesome fullsize. From what you've said I think the cc fits the mood. Hurry up and edit it so we can watch it. :)
 
Good Job, Looks very good. I like in the first shot you can see the reflection of the camera. Good on the CC too. It gives it the look that your going for I think

Nice work! Looks very filmic, much more so than a lot of what I've seen posted. Good shot composition and proper lighting can really make this camera shine. Curious decision to go silent. Can't wait to see the rest.

I'm with Barry completely.

A couple of the chosen comps arent working for me:

Particulary the knocking on the door; but damn that is subjective if me isnt it ?

- Again; we can sit here all day and say I would have dont his and that but alas we have zero idea of the context of whats going on !

-One thing that would be cool is too get another look at the 'mom' on the second shot of her staring down; instead of the same identical shot we just saw.

And example would be to show the mom standing in hallways knocking as oppossed to the same identical hand knocking again....

I do LOVE the last shot; great comp!

I heard Ridley once say he tried not to show the same idential shot if possible and always strives to give the auidence a fersh look

I just tried to cc it my self for practice and fun....

in my opinion white walls only look good when they are really white. like in mcgregors similo.

I like my version but i guess it's not the mood you need or are looking for.
 
Chris, on the phone you said something about the image which I won't quote here in fear that you'll get flamed for (lol) but DAMN DUDE! The image is WAY better than the DVX!!!! It's large and crisp! Perfect canvas to play with!

Turn off that lips red! Children are more fascinating when them lips are graded neutral as their skin colour. Trust me!
Try to grading the tub as the skin of the child, "tieing" the tub and the little girl giving to watcher a symbiotic relantioship between the two.

Thanks a lot. I just finished the first cut. As soon as I have the score I will share it with everyone.

Wow, my wife's mother passed away when she was nine. Sounds like it will be impactful!

That is my daughter in the film (she is 8). During one of the scenes she just started weeping. I said (being the director) why are you crying now, there is no crying in this scene. She just looked at me and said, "I don't want you to die". It just about broke my heart.

I totally agree with you and Ridley. I wish I had shot that two different ways. It feels very dull in the edit to me. Like there is no urgency. I should have done the first shot, "the rapping", wider and then pushed in for "the banging".

The feedback is awesome, I keep learning so much from everyone. I love the images with the HVX as well. I just wish it didn't require quite so much light. This was shot in a 6 x 8 bath room with 2 lights (a 500 watt Rifa and a Kino Flo) and a jib to get the camera over the tub. Here is a behind the scenes shot:

(notice how the jib strategically protects my daughter's dignity).

I was probably being a little too critictal on the phone. When you take your time with the shots you do get some amazing visuals. Of course it shows off all your mistakes too (as well as bad grout work). :)

I think the other cc's are very cool and extremely dramatic. I guess, I just wanted the cc to feel more natural as I think that serves the story better.
