TrueColor vs Vision02 preset

I, like others, are growing tired of this constant search for the "favorite" preset.

Looking at the vision 02 preset and comparing it to Truecolor, i see there are not many differences in the look, regardless of the difference in the actual preset numbers.

I took the Truecolor preset and implemented all the parameters that the vision 02 has ( but leaving the RGB gain, RGB balance, and RGB matrix alone ) so that they had the same levels of blacks, gamma curve and contrast, but the colors are true to their own preset.

This is what i came up with. I hope it finds a purpose for some of you out there.

Reference skin tone ( big fan of Judd Apatow films, so i am using it as a reference)

hmmm... the whole [ i m g ] [ / i m g ] thing isn't working...

can you not use imageshack anymore???

So yeah, looking at these i have to say im definitely a bigger fan of the vision02 preset. Curious as i have always noticed the magenta cast in the past, but somehow comparing these two it is not so apparent.

They are both raw, no CC in post.

I agree. I prefer the Vision grabs. The true ones seem to have a bit of a green hue to the skin tones, while the vision ones tend to have a warmer and more natural look overall.

my motto is "fix it in post" :)

hmm... I think you're missing the point...

The ultimate XHA1 preset.

EXPLANATION

The Trend:
When we use high end digital cameras, sporting more than 10bit, high res, no compression 4:4:4 color space, we want to shoot with few contrast, in order to correct it during the post production process.

The Exception:
With highly compressed HDV cameras featuring only 8 bit the trick above can't be done without affecting the quality drastically, because the camera only uses few of the 8 bits available to describe the image, obtaining banding and resulting in a heavily deteriored footage if color corrected.

The Solution
Creating a preset that uses the most bits possible, with REAL BLACKS AT 0 IRE, and that can be used without any CC

Here is it:

VISION02

This preset sports high contrast, 0 IRE blacks, less banding and better SN ratio.

VISION02 SETTING PARAMETERS

GAMMA CINE1
KNEE LOW
BLACK PRESS
PED 0
SETUP -9
SHARPNESS 1
HDF LOW
DHV 0
COR 0
NR1 OFF
NR2 HIGH
CMX CINE1
CGN 0

all other parameters at 0 (default)

It is basically the Vision02 preset

GAMMA CINE1
KNEE LOW
BLACK PRESS
PED 0
SETUP -9
SHARPNESS ( i kept mine at 0 )
HDF MDL ( didn't want it on low )
DHV 0
COR 0
NR1 OFF
NR2 OFF ( Kept this off as well )
CMX CINE1
CGN 0

That Judd Apatow shot makes the HDV look pritty bad. I asume it's 35mm? :)

Is these presents the same when using a XL-H1 a/s?

Thanks

well, ther are things to consider.

1) my focus wasn't spot on, it is quite soft, it was handheld without any focus check, just by eye.
2) the pineapple express shot was color timed, my images were raw.

3) if you were to color grade the shots you would get some very nice stuff.

I shoot with vision (not 02) exclusively and was always disappointed in the low light performance but I LOVE the look and colors. After studying this newest revision, I compared the gammas (CINE02 on vision vs CINE01 on vision02) and slapped my forehead. I'm looking forward to trying out vision02 :).

Thanks for the info.

*EDIT*

Well..tried vision02 and also tried to lower the gamma to 1 from 2 on the original vision. Did not look as good. Oh well...guess I need some external lights for reception :S.

I created the Vision02 preset, but definetly the only parameter that makes it great is: SETUP -9 (black is 0.0.0).
I did set all my settings with setup=0 and now i like all much more and choose depending on situation.

i am not sure if i know what you mean someday... but anyway, what do you think of PaPa´s modifications?
i am searching for a preset that will provide highest possible quality in most situations, and then rather do color-correction in post. basically what Someday wrote in an earlier post.
and one more thing; did you make the vision02 preset for use with 35mm. if that is the case, what do you think about vision02 and no 35mm adapter?

I mean that every setting should have SETUP to -9 in order to film with absolute blacks.
The modifications are great, sometimes i prefere the Truecolor latitude, more filmic.
I don't know how this preset can behave when used without 35mm adapter. One is for sure: I won't unmount it until i buy a 35mm sensor camera!

This evening i created maybe the best preset in my research.
Name: Vision03
Attributes: Film emulation, very low gamma with super contrast, super whites, super blacks and super colors.

Comments:
When i created Vision02 i has so happy to discover the blacks in the A1 that i was happy with it.
Now i'm determined to make only white balance CC (or special fx), but nothing else, because i want my camera to have the right gamma, colorimetry and contrast.
Vision03 is the answer and i'm EXCITED about it.
Tomorrow i will post a short clip and the settings
Good night
