True 16x9 in 480p

One of the biggest gripes about the DVX is it's fixed full-frame action. We don't know the full specs, but are we all assuming the HVX is capturing an anamorphic image in a standard 16x9 format?

So, unlike the DVX, can this camera capture 24p 480 to DV tape (aha, yes I said it, blasphemous to Panny at the moment: tape) with TRUE 16x9?

If so, wouldn't this be a better investment in image quality for someone who wants to shoot a 24p movie in SD widescreen who may not be able to afford the production costs of HD yet —keyword, yet. Then graduate up to HD?

*on a side note, is anyone wishing they'd make a more compact HVX version later WITHOUT a DV deck and only P2 slots?

Yes the HVX will be good for shooting 16:9 SD.

And I dont think a HVX without deck would be good idea. With the deck it makes the HVX more flexible.

Even if I will shoot HD sometimes. 99% of my work will still be in SD.

i may be wrong but i swear that early production rumors/photos of the HVX showed a camera that didn't have a drive at all. it was smaller and had a handle that flipped down. i swear maybe hearing/seeing this around 03/04, perhaps for the 2004 CES or NAB.

does anyone else remember seeing vague pics of a camera like that under a semitransparent cover?

I remember that contentlab, it looked like an 8mm camera. I have no idea if that was the beginings of the HVX, and they just went a different direction, but I remember there being proposed two versions, one MPEG and one DVCPRO.

I really wish I knew what that was and what happened to that product or direction.

I agree, the HVX should be a great cam to use in SD. While it's still out of my price-range, having just bought a DVX, I look forward to checking out used cams when the second generation HVX comes out. While it can be impossibly expensive to keep up with ever-evolving technology, those of us who don't mind being "a step behind" can get some great deals on awesome equipment. I predict that the once the HVX and DVXb are solidly on the market, people will be buying used DVX100a's in great condition for easily under two grand.

that was just a mock up..... I believe it has been refferred to many.. many.. many.. times as the "balsa wood mockup"...

Yeah, anyone thinking about an XL2 should take a close look at the HVX. Native 16x9 MiniDV to tape, PLUS the ability to later on shoot DVCPro50 and DVCProHD, all for less than $6000.

I know it was just a mockup Loki, I was just wondering what they were doing with it? It's just something teased that was not really ever referred to again except that it wasn't the HVX.

I'd say about 50% of my work will be SD to start out - but when it is, it's gonna be DVCPRO50 and not DV. Personally, I could care less about the deck (but I know why they've included it).

It was just the beginnings of their "handheld P2 cam." It's evolved into the HVX we know now.

I remember TWO DIFFERENT mockups from Pana without tape - both looked like a 8mm cam and both were announced to appear between 2006 and 2007 as P2-/SD-based CONSUMER-cams - so I'm sure, they are still working on it, as it's not comparable with the HVX200 - it will just be perhaps the first Panasonic Consumer HD-Cam, tapeless with P2 or SD-card. But who knows what HD-format they will use.... If you count all details together: 1) Panasonic goes tapeless 2) no HD-consumer cam so far 3) 2 mockups that look very similar (both like a super-8 cam) appearing in 2 different years - it really looks to me as Panasonic is working on that cam for the last 3 years and it can come out any moment after the HVX200 will be on the market for a while...
