Trouble updating firmware

I cannot seem to get my camera to upgrade properly. I follow the instructions by placing it in pc mode and then connecting the usb chord but I get nothing. The light continues to flash and I left it on all not to do the upgrade. Any thoughts on what might be the problem?
 
One note:

I'm referring to the Mac Installation instructions ...

When you get to step 3 (Open the SD Card slot cover ... Now power up the camera while pressing the Handle Record button ...) If done correctly the LCD monitor *should* go black. What the instructions fail to mention is that you must make sure the Handle Record On/Off switch that is located to the right of the button on the camera handle is set to "On."

Yes I am using a mac and yea there is a mac version available. I will check to make sure that the button is on, I think it is but I hope thats the problem.
 
So the switch on the zoom handle was set to "ON" but the firmware upgrade is still not working any other suggestions out there?
 
Here's what I did on my Macbook Pro

HMC150's USB is disconnected, no SDHC cards

- Run the HMC150 Firmware updater
- Open SDHC door
- Press the Rec key and then turn it on
- *LCD screen just stayed black for me as if I never turned it on* (They should make this clearer)
- Connect USB cable from camera to host PC
- HMC150 Firmware Updater will prompt you to update the firmware
