TRON Legacy

Cyberpunk is about Man becoming Machine and Machine becoming Man.

That's a good way to look at it, although I would add 'perceived as' instead of becoming myself. I'd also say that's still just one part. The mega corporations controlling everything are still a huge part of it, especially in Stephenson's and Gibson's books which are to me the defacto basis of cyberpunk. Hehe, I think it is required that you have lots of Japanese named characters as well. I remember reading Mona Lisa Overdrive and having a hard time with two names that were like 14 letters each with LITTLE difference! :)

There is also the aspect of "the street" in cyberpunk, something that started with Gibson's work. Not just hackers fighting the system, but the lower class. Kinda ties into what Rick mentioned about the mega corporations.

But man becoming machine and machine becoming man is a great summation.

And don't forget the mirror shades, the Yakuza, and hard boiled high tech noir atmosphere.

Totally agree. When I used to write missions for the RPG game CyberPunk, the source material went to great lengths promoting just how important the mega corps were. In fact, the more I recall, I don't remember government having any role (or even mentioned!) in the source material. Given I still have it, I could always check :)

I can say, I played with the Nintendo 3DS with the augmented reality and it was AWESOME! I cannot wait to see that get more popular. It will be interesting to see if films start adapting that as well. I'd say, we've seen a little of it in films like IronMan, where the HUD actually does things to the live video feed, but it is never referred to as much.

Don't they have car systems that project onto windshields augmented reality stuff to help during night driving? I remember seeing this stuff YEARS ago, although it was NOT referred to as AR.

Have you seen the trailers for the upcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution game yet?

I think it looks pretty good, and seems very reminiscent of the classic cyberpunk style we have been discussing.

Wow! That does look good. Yeah, the environment does have that feel. Kinda reminded me of the beginning of Johnny Mnemonic with all the rioting and such. We need more monofiliment whips in film! :)
