Dear DVX aficionados,
I made this little short film today, and I think it's alright, and I thought I might post it up here on my favorite website to see what you guys might think about it. It's not my favorite by a longshot, and I'm sure I can do better, but hey, I like it.
It was shot with my DVX100a, edited with FCP 5, Magic Bullet 2.0 editors (No 85, and Punchy [unchecked the 'do lens']), I used a tall halogen lamp for bathroom scenes and it came out pretty well.
I hope you enjoy it!

nice!!!! that's some great footage. what settings did you use in your cam? that's once again the proof that with only a cheap lamp and the cam talented guys can make some great stuffs, even more poetic and personal than with tons of complex lightings and DPs and dollys and matteboxes and electroplasticinic adapters and filters N°548684b4 and triple back flip lcd monitors ..........

That is one of the best footage I've seen here. Tell us what camera settings did you use? It makes me feel like throwing my FX1 in a lake and buying a dvx...hum...maybe I will.

That looks really great! I especially liked the low-angle shots of the girl by the water, her walking into focus and the one of her silhuette - smoking... Nice!

that's what i've done :)
not using anymore my hdv since i bought a dvx100b .....

Looks great Luke - I really enjoyed it, thanks for posting.
Nice look - some of the lake stuff was a bit too dark for my taste, but overall it looked great. Nice sillouette shot of her by the lake, and the shot that follows it (water at the shore) was the best in the whole thing in my opinion, I just wish you would have held it a little bit longer so I could get a better look at it.
:)

It looks great, but it never really gelled for me. Nice shots, nice music... but it just didn't all come together. I guess I was expecting it to build to something more by the end. But, like I said, I really did enjoy it - good work.

As far as everyone's comments go - I think it's a bit of a slap in the face to Luke to give all the praise to the DVX. I've seen as much crap shot with the DVX as I have good looking footage.

It's not the camera - it's the operator. I know it's been said before, but it's worth repeating. I'm sure Luke could have done just as good a job with an FX1, XL2, HVX, etc etc etc

please read again the posts, you will see you're wrong ...... we were saying that this footage was the proof that a talented guy can make a very nice job with a dv cam and a cheap lamp. and we were talking about dvx settings because if you read what is written at the top of your screen, this place is called "dvx user". the fact that a guy who saw that footage wants to throw his hdcam for the dvx means that he was impressed. and rawfa knows about dvx for a while because i saw his name on several video forums like cinemek, ..... thats even better for luke to see that his footage changed rawfa mind.
that's crazy, there is always someone on this forum to give lessons to others on how to be, what cannot be said, .....

I think what Luis was trying to say was that there's a bunch of DVX footage out there that looks like something a cow would regurgitate, but this guy made it look amazing with his talent....and that is the case with any camera. You can have a varicam in your hands and make the footage look worst than a lot of stuff shot on video. I read an article about this guy in south africa who shot an entire full lenght feature with 8 mobile phones. But anyway, I think this thread is being diverted from its' original purpose. Live and let live, my friends.

Maybe I mispoke.
My intent wasn't to slam the people who made the comments, my point was to make it clear to Luke that I thought he had a good amount of talent - regardless of what camera he shot with. It was meant to praise Luke, not insult anyone else.
Sorry if that didn't come across.
I obviously chose the wrong words, and it obviously wasn't "everyone's comments" like I said - it was just a response to Rawfa's FX1 comment. Either way, I overstated my point obviously.

Wasn't trying to 'give lessons' to anyone...and I'm surely not telling anyone what NOT to say. Feel free to say anything you like (just like you have) - and I'll feel free to do the same (just like I have).

Sorry for the thread hijack - wasn't my intent.
Let's get this back on track.

Yeah, pretty much that's all I was getting at.
Nothing groundbreaking, nothing controversial.
I think it just came out wrong.
Luckily I don't make my living as a writer.

ok, no problem luis! both side misunderstanding. i was just coming back from another thread where someone came and judged the discussion in an unpleasant and unfair way (i saw you were participating luis so you know what i'm talking about :) )

Right there with ya, Luis. Yeah, the dvx is an incredible camera, but it takes a very talented person to tell the camera to get these images.

I love your stuff, Luke. The light was absolutely perfect for something like this. Wardrobe, set, etc. all right on. :) CC was great, but what really got me was the music. Did you do it yourself? Someone else? Either way it worked really well.

Tone worked well. End shot I would have liked to have seen her dress
floating onto shore.

WOW!
I've never had my thread psudo-hijacked before, but hey, I loved the discussion fellas. The music, for those who are wondering was Vincent Gallo, from the soundtrack to Buffalo '66. I usually try to avoid using other soundtrack music, but I really love that song. It's incredible. As for the dress floating on the shore idea, that would've been great. I was planning on doing more stuff with it, but it got dark fast and was unable to get some more shots that I wanted. Thanks guys so much for all of the comments. Like I said before, this is CERTAINLY not my best work, and was just a little project for fun. Hopefully I can make a really interesting piece of work with some narrative and a concrete (but perhaps abstract) storyline. Thanks again to everyone who commented!

P.S. Camera setting were as follows:

Chroma Phase: -7

Auto whitebalanced, some of the stuff shot on the lake was with 6 gain for lack of light and increased grainy, uncomfortable feel, I suppose.
