Tripods

It may be in terms of numbers, but if you want the best match, get a Vinten Vision 3 with a #2 spring. We have the 2-stage CF models. I'm a tripod freak and it it the first tripod that I have EVER been happy with for small cameras. It let's me do the same "broadcast smooth" moves that people hire me for.

Everytime I let a DVX100 user try it another Vision3 gets sold...

Repair costs on a Sachtler are like buying a tripod. In the big gun tripod arena we use a Cartoni Delta. My friends with Sactlers have spent $1,500 getting maintenance on theirs. I have never spent more than $200 on the Cartoni.

absolutely not...

All the Vintens I have used that are a couple years old really don't hold up well, but that could of changed with newer models.
I have yet to have a Vinten head that needs service. Will it happen someday, probably. As for Sactlers being indestructable, ask a TV station... they'll tell you they need more service than a Cartoni or Vinten in a rough environment...
Micheal.. your a smart cookie.. The 5 was one of Vintens first DV tripods sourced out to Bogen, and Gitzo had one at that time as well.

In fact, you wont believe it but Vinten, Gitzo, Bogen and Manfrotto, O'conner and Sachtler are all owned by the same company.
Are you sure? I don't think Vinten, O'Connel and Sactler are owned by them. Manfrotto does own Gitzo and Bogen. The new cheap (black) Vinten is a Gitzo head, which is a Bogen. The other Vision heads (3 on up) are different than anything Bogen or Gitzo has.

also own a 12 year old Vision 20. Locks don't lock real tight but otherwise works very well. Vintens feature 180 degree tilt. love that.
Vinten USA very helpful with parts & service. Sent the 20 in about 5 years ago for tune up. They have a loaner program for service. excellent customer service!
I'd be careful saying that. If you have a stripped DVX then you need a #1. If you have a shotgun mic, use D54 batteries, have a zoom controller on the handle, a #2 works better. If you mount a light or wireless mics you WILL need a #2.

My change of heart came when I had to hump a Vinten Vision to the top of Albert Mountain.  My students with thier cheaper prosumer pods did some good shooting and less weight.
Okay Slapdragon, you're a smart chap. Here's where you went wrong. First, get a CF stick Vision 3... it weighs less than some heads alone. Second, get one of those students to carry it up the hill!

For major portability I bought a large diameter DuoPod (the monopod with the big fott that you fold out and stand on). To that I mounted a Manfrotto bowl adapter and the Vision3 head.

Was wondering when someone was going to mention that?

Honestly, for the money, nothing beats a Bogen.
Tell Cody Mitch keeps telling you to get the Vinten tripods... :-)

Re: Tripods

thanks mitch, a strong testimonial. I am negotiating a vision 3 head as we speak.

now for light and strong sticks...

:) Actually, the tripod I now use is the smallest, lighest, ball mount tripod I have ever used. And I do not repair it -- I throw it away every two years.

Yes some misinfo floating around here...

All the companies are owned by vitec, check the website if you dont believe me.
http://www.vitecgroup.com

And sorry to break your heart, but the pro 5 indeed came off the same assembly lines as the 501 and 503. Some got Bogen stickers, some got Vintens :)

the 503 is a fluid head, it just doesnt use seperate fluid cartridges for pan and tilt.

Re: Tripods

no kidding...

I want to know where the extra quid goes. pretty serious price difference.

Well, we have had, and I have sold, 25 Pro6DC kits, 5 Pro10DC, and 3 Vision 3 kits. I love their stuff man, and so do all my customers. ;D

Re: Tripods

Ok, now I'm almost clear, yet somehow confused by all the info here. ::)

thinks I have narrowed it down to 2 models (are they in the same price range at all ??)

1) vinten vision 3 with 3775 aluminum legs.

2) miller DS 5 system.

what says you ?

Re: Tripods

Whoah dude, a DS-5 in comparison with a Vinten Vision 3?  I mean Miller is great and all, but isn't there a striking weight and price difference?  The Vinten Vision 3 can support a lot more weight and has a sweet counterbalance system, but it is like double the price of the DS5.  The DS5 is an excellent system for the money, but it only supports 5.5lbs.  I would go with a heavier head like the DS10 (10lbs tolerance) or the DS20 (20lbs tolerance) for the comparison.  ;)  The DS20 is almost identical in price and tolerance with the Vision 3.   :)

Also, I agree with Mitch, the Vision system is one of the most trouble free systems out there.  ;)

Re: Tripods

So is it correct to say that the Vision 3 systems would be a *bling bling* tripod, while the miller DS 10 / DS 20 would be in a similar range ? While the DS5 is more of a entry/mid range tripod then ?

Cools. coz I get the impression that there's a whole lot of controversy out there for Bogen/manfrotto entry level 501/503s (and the similar vinten pro 5 - rebadged ?) so I guess I might stick to a miller DS 5 for now - for the sheer reason that I've used one extensively before...

p.s. : I hated those manfrotto photographic models. they were the least ergonomically designed tripods when you're shooting on a medium format film camera. I constantly feared for the Mamiya RB67 .

Okay, first disposable contacts, then disposable 35mm cameras, now disposable tripods... why not?

Is the 5 that black Vinten head? If so, then yes, you are correct, and it's obvious just looking at it. It isn't a fluke that this head isn't the same color as every other Vinten head.
People who have owned a lot of tripods frequently refer to Bogen heads as being "friction drag". While they may technically be a fluid head, there are fluid heads and fluid disc heads (Cartoni invented the head using fluid discs). Bogen fluid heads never feel the same as what I would call a true fluid head like the Cartoni, Sachtler or Vinten.

Just my opinion and a lot of years using them. If I had to choose between a big (better) camera and a Bogen tripod, or a DVX with a Vinten, give me the Vinten... I can bring back better video.
