Tripods

Re: Tripods

Yep, I'm a Vision 3 man as well. It's the one thing in my kit that I'd be really upset to lose. I'm sure that Millers, Sachtlers etc. perform equally well but I love my Vinten.

And that's probably the point when you are investing in kit at this level - whichever you get, you'll most likely not be disappointed, very likely be thrilled and maybe even fall in love. :-*

My change of heart came when I had to hump a Vinten Vision to the top of Albert Mountain. My students with thier cheaper prosumer pods did some good shooting and less weight.

Good pans: I agree that a good pod = goos pans, but in this case it is partly experience. It is easier for a less experienced person to get a good pan from a better pod. Heck, even a teenage community access producer can get a smooth pan from a Kestral. I think that as you gain in experience, you gain in ability to handle lower end equipment better. I was not really advising anyone else to follow my route. I have just found that the cheap crap in working better and better for me as years go by, and my back is put to less of a test.

Re: Tripods

Does EVS hook up a DVXUser discount on sticks and accessories too or is the famous discount only for cameras?

Re: Tripods

yes.. EVS gives a discount on everything they sell to DVXuser members.

Re: Tripods

I'm a big fan of the Vision 3 but don't have the dough, so I got a 503 head (used, perfect condition) and I'm probably going to stick it on some Miller SOLO DV sticks. I like how high/low they go and how quick they set up... anyone using the SOLO sticks?

I know what you mean. Sometimes we have to shoot slums or other dangerous places around here. Sometimes is amazing what can a consumer camcorder and a cheap photo tripod do for a film (and your health).

On a separate note about crappy stuff, did anybody realize how nice those cheaper panasonic consumer 3CCD PV-DV953 are? I just used one and am very pleased. That thing delivers something. Ok it's not pro, neither great, but it hass all manual controls and the image quality is not far from very good. And it's small and pretty as hell. I was really impressed. Too bad I just bought a DVX ;D ;D ;D

Re: Tripods

Whoah selling them like used cars Rush... Thanks for the discounts i might be buying some in the future.
I own a 3182/503 combo and if you are for heavy duty stuff then definitely look into bogen 3182 tripod which is roughly around 8lbs with the 75mm bowl supporting up to 44lbs! On top of that get the bogen 3502 leveling head for you do not want to move that 8 pound pod around to level correctly. In my opinion this combo works good enough to kill and i am looking forward to set my soon to be dvx on it. One glitch is that the 503 is not a true fluid head as we already know so yes there is "stiction" on the start of a tense pan/tilt so be sure to stretch it out before the shot.

Anytime dude. Key is that these are no lemons! 3182 is a righteous tripod, I have one in the lobby. Haven't sold near as many as the 525, but I think the 3182 is just as good. The rated strength of the 525 is like 25lbs, but I had about 100lbs of jib+remote head+camera+weights and it did great. Ball never slipped, legs never slid... I have a feeling the 3182 would do just as well. Honestly, for the money, nothing beats a Bogen.

What's a Raise?

Actually these guys take really good care of me. They give me what I like more than money: Freedom. Freedom to go and do a documentary in France and come back to a great job. Freedom to get on this site all day if I wanted. I like that more than raises. Even though, I can't say I would throw money back in their face or anything.... ;D

Re: Tripods

dont worry Rush, you can just tell them to give your bonus to me, I promise to buy stuff from EVS with it :)

Re: Tripods

;D ;D ;D

No wait, I forgot, I have to buy a new sword so I can find that darned elusive six-fingered man.
