Tricks to getting less noise at high ISOs?

Doing my own tests on the 7D, I notice that noise usually creeps in at 800 ISO.

But I've seen some online clips where the ISO settings were above 1600 that show almost no noise. Is there a trick in camera or in post to get rid of the noise when using high ISOs? Or is it just the online compression that gets rid of it?

Compression might get rid of some too. You can also add your own noise to mask the "digital" looking noise with something more filmic.

I'll drop my saturation an extra notch or two in the picture profile menu, another thing you can do is this:

set your stills mode to raw.
turn white balance to auto
get a white card and put it in the lighting that is predominantly lighting the scene (presuming this is an available light situation)

shoot a still, well exposed of the white card. card should be in the middle of the histogram.

use the programmable white balance set to the still you took... probably a little overboard but it does help in weird lighting situations.

Here is a neat video benchmark
