Tricking Skype into thinking XF305 is a webcam...

Howdy all.

I'm not really sure how to phrase this so I'll just shoot: Can I trick Skype into thinking that my Canon XF305 is a webcam?

Here's my thinking: I think I'd have to passthrough the XF video signal into a Blackmagic Intensity box (or something similar?) and then connect that to the computer. Then I'd open up YawCam or ManyCam and select the source (XF305) and then set the video/audio source in Skype as YawCam. Would that work?

Any other options that anyone can think of?

Thanks!

Marshall makes HDMI and HDSDI to USB3 UVC converters that Skype and other web streaming programs instantly recognize as web cameras no matter what camera you plug into them. Drivers are built into Windows and Mac OS to support them.

WE use these regularly to support soft client video conference apps in corporate meeting rooms with various different cameras.

Wow that is perfect. So if using one of these products I'd ditch YawCam and go straight from the camera to Skype? If so that'd be a dream.

No, I have not. I have not used it myself but I have watched a number of reviews as well. Most of them do make a reference to the audio but I haven't heard anyone say anything negative.

The audio is going to be the digital signal from the source. The D/A conversion is done the receiving computer so if sample rates aren't matched you are going to have issues with dithering and speed if the signal is not resampled before it is played but that is not the fault of the Magewell device. These units are sometimes used in sophisticated setups for Live Broadcasting and Skype conferencing.

Here is a webcaster that talks about using the device with a video switcher. Might find this useful...

The task you are asking it to do is aimed squarely at its intended purpose. Watch some more reviews, maybe get it from B&H so you can return it if you are dissatisfied.

This is the encoder that I use and I can confirm that it works well with Skype. It also works with GoToMeeting and a bunch of other video services. It's been the most accepted of the devices I've used -- far more than the Blackmagic UltraStudio Recorder I used to use.

Nice Mitch. It's got SDI connectors, does 3G-SDI and it has loop through, has a video scaler & frame converter, as well as a full metal casing. The specs are impressive:

Put this one on my list.
