"Triage" Short Film

I don't believe $20,000 is enough to warrant automatically shooting on film (Lab costs, blowup, etc). In fact, I believe the filmmakers have more flexibility using the 35mm adapter w/ DV.

Nice job on Triage, btw, Curugon. Loved the documentary style. Reminded me of 24.

The original budget was 20k. We're looking at a much larger one now, knock on wood. We haven't decided on formats yet - it'll either be 35 or HD.

The dev trailer was shot just for presentation/promotional purposes, and the DVX held its weight!

Thanks Duke - and I'm not just saying that because you're a mentat...

That footage for Triage is absolutely incredible, what the hell am I doing wrong?? :P
I wish I could get my DVX stuff to look that good...

Terrific short :)

Yea it does look really good. Really great, I can't wait to see what you do with a longer piece with more story :)

Cheers Curugon! That was some nice compositing! Having personally done AE rotoscoping for years, hats off to you. Rotoscoping smoke into a wildly flailing handheld camera move going backwards! Nice.

Very nice, Curugon.

I liked the dirt explosions. Very realistic. I think they used a similar digital solution in the first episodes of the new season of Battlestar Galactica. Yours looked just as good.

Do you know of any good tutorials on how to accomplish this effect?

I use a 3D match moving software called Syntheyes, which is very good and very affordable. No matchmover is perfect though, and you gotta do a lot of tweaking. The explosions were real, shot against blue sky, then comped in.

On a side note, I've found that compositing is infintely easier when shooting at high shutter speeds, due to the absence of motion blur. I've also just started using a Wacom tablet for vector painting, and it saves a lot of time.

Thanks Rush, not least for selling me my DVX and Flowpod in the first place!

edit: I'm not familiar with many compositing tutorials, but do check Creative Cow.

Inspiring work. I've watched HEAT about 6 million times, when I heard the track I immediately was familiar with it. I kinda figured this was supposed to be at the same time NEAL and his crew was robbing the bank in downtown L.A.:).

I really thought this short had some added help like the Micro35 or the G35. I was really surprised when you posted that you shot it right out the box. The sound was great too. What was the brand of mixer, boom mike did you use?

:)

We used an Audio Technica AT4073A, strapped to the DVX (another EVS purchase). Mixed in FCP HD. I'm making a 5.1 Dolby DVD of it right now, and it's sounding pretty good, especially the explosions in the parking lot.

No mixer panel? So you just plugged the mic straight to the DVX's XLR connections?

I like to check out this section of the site to see what the DVX is capable of. Wow. Definately some of the best work I have seen (even compared to stuff shot with mini 35). Nice job!

Most people plug the mic directly into the camera. The DVX has excellent audio properties. The key is to realize that the headphone output sounds a bit noisier than what's actually going to tape.

Yep, just keep your eyes on the meter!

By the by, just came about this still from behind the scenes. Pretty much sums up the joys of guerilla-style filming.
