do the legs matter. i see some bogen 503 kits for about 470. is this a good tripod head and legs. Does the Bogen 503 stick at all? Whats the next best tripod after the 503.
I recommend the Slik 504QF II for $119.95 (you can find it at B&H Photo as well as other places).
This tripod has a smooth fluid head, supports up to 11 pounds and is solid for the price.
In my mind, if you can get stable, solid support and smooth panning with a decent fluid head, then you have most of what a good high end tripod can offer. This slik tripod delivers nicely considering the $120 price.
That Slik is a far shot from "good". I'm glad you get good results with it. However I *highly* doubt it's a fliud head - it appears to be a friction head that lubricated with some fluid (whidh they all are). It's lacking most all proper controls, not to mention that it probabaly won't lastvery logn either.
The original coment of ' "Good" and "$100-$300 max" do not belong in the same sentence.' is 100% correct.
The sugested Manfrotto/Bogen units are a good solid bet.
I agree that a $120 Slik tripod is not going to be on par with a much more expensive tripod. It is fairly solid but a little maxed out if you approach the 8 to 11 lb limit. The fluid head is indeed some kind of friction fluid head but does very smooth pans on par with true fluid heads that I have used and pans even better than some Bogen heads I have tried from other peoples gear.
My point is that for $120 vs $1,200, the performance difference is more minimal than the price difference. If skrott can not spend more than $300, then maybe the Slik would be a good choice and give decent performance for the price.
Personally, when I get the budget for it, I plan on getting a spendier, better quality tripod for myself and recommend that anyone who can afford it do the same.
I've been using the Davis and Sanford ProVista Airlift Tripod for nearly a year now and it's worked out good so far. It has a semi-fluid head (not a true fluid) and the pans I get out of it are decent. As of late, I have been having some issues with my horizontal pans sticking ever-so-slightly and as such will be investing, most likely, in a Bogen 503 because it sounds like a solid enough head for the price. I was short on cash a year ago and do not regret going the cheaper route for around $150 but alas it's time to move on. I do recommend the ProVista if you're on a budget. B&H has it.
