I'm going to Switzerland on a short vacation. I will be carrying my DVX on the flight. Do you have any tips or suggestions for me? Is there anything special I need to do to my camera/equipment?
I routinely carry my camera on when I fly. I just can't bring myself to check it.
Nothing unusual about the DVX as a carry-on. Just pack it as normal, but make sure that you take any lens-cleaning fluid out of the carry-on. TSA will take that.
They do ask you to take the camera out of the case at the X-ray check point, but that's nothing new and isn't too much of a pain.
But since you are going out of the country, check on the electrical systems for Switzerland. make sure that you have plenty of charged batteries, and an appropriate adapter in the event that you'd need to plug in. And pack plenty of tape (which can be checked).
Not sure about US Customs, but here in Canada, Canada Customs will issue a card (for free) with serial numbers stating that the camera equipment originated in Canada and that way you don't get bothered by customs coming back into Canada when they might accuse you of buying equipment out of country and try and ding you taxes and duties..
cruise's advice is very important, and a good habit to take. Swizerland might not make an issue, but other countries will. (Moraco, etc.)
Also, make sure that all cassettes you take (to or back) with you are well protected (in a airtight freezing bag or something). A friend of mine coming back from Brazil had some fluid leek in her bag and some of it got on one of her cassettes and she could never read the cassette again.
