Traveling with FS700 with Odyssey

thanks (again) Gene, for your recommendation. I purchased the Think Tank Airport Accelerator Camera Backpack. Trying to find best filling in the end I removed the movcam cage. Weight is now 9.6kgs / 23.2lbs so check in stuff hopefully will bend the rules for a little over weight. I still have to put in some batteries an SDI cables.
I "borrowed" a breakfast box from the kids for 3 SSD plus tb adapter. btw: the loupe is shortened.

After Mitch posted his pic of the TrekPak on twitter a couple of months ago, I bought a set with the Peli 1510. This is how I organised mine:

IMG_3228.jpg

Because the Peli has the wheel cutouts protrucing into the case, I decided to move the camera section up a bit to give an unrestricted compartment. The power cables and chargers on the bottom of the case. I also sub divided these to give even greater strength to the camera compartment as this is the heaviest part and the long dividers can flex a bit. It's rock steady now :)

I still plan on getting a neoprene slip cover for the O7Q but haven't found exactly the right size yet. I felt that this would give extra protection to it when it's out of the case too.

For this setup, I bought an extra 3 x 12" 1510 dividers and some more pins. The underneath of the dividers is also pinned for extra strength. Unfortunately the TrekPak kit only comes with one long divider which I've mentioned to them just isn't enough for pretty much any useful configuration I can think of. It wouldn't have been so bad but I had to get this shipped from the US to the UK which obviously cost quite a bit and I wasn't initially aware these were needed, so had to order the extras separately at yet more expense! Initial kit shipping was with USPS who were terrible - it took 18 days to get here even on their super high priority international service. Luckily, TrekPak now offer UPS and the extras only took 3 days :)

Nice setups guys !

Pgale, just as a matter of advice, you should not transport your FS700 with any adapter on it.

One should not transport cameras with lenses on it too, even if it's a regular practice in broadcast.

OK. What's the reason for that - potential strain on the mounting/breakage/alignment? Even with a very light adapter like the Metabones? Must admit, I always transport my other cameras with lenses, particularly ENG PMW-350 etc. not had a problem in around 13-14 years - but that's not to say there couldn't be one of course, just interested in your reasons.

Hey Clermond,

If you want to fit a few more things inside your Think Tank bag (like lenses), what I do is put the 7Q and cables in a small laptop / notebook bag and stuff it into the laptop slot on the backpack cover. It fits fine and then I can put a few more things inside the bag as well.

thanks for this hint, Gene! This is my flight on board set up. I am always afraid that the hellhounds at the boarding gate will refuse my luggage and order it for cargo hold. I've seen that once.. Therefore I avoid anything which gives the impression my luggage is too big or too heavy ;-) But I will check it. I always appreciate your advice. Thanks again!

That is a fantastic travel solution. I love that one.

A backpack is maybe the way to go... I don't have a car so even getting to the gigs is sometimes problem with carrying stuff. With a backpack I would get my hands free for tripods and light ;)

If the airline is hassling passengers for the weight of the carry on, there is a solution. Take out the heavier bits and put them in your pockets. My friend got in a showdown with a flight attendant who wouldn't let him carry his camera bag onboard. He took every lens out and put it in a pocket and hung the camera around his neck giving the flight attendant the empty bag. I'm sure he looked pretty funny with a 70-200 in his pocket, but it worked.

There should be a total weight, passenger + carry on luggage. If someone weights 30 kilos more than me and can bring a 10 kilo bag and they then give me trouble cause my carry on bag is 2 kilos overweight. That's not right!
But then every film maker would have a tiny assistant bringing a giant bag. Ok, that won't work either, I guess ;)

that's why I picked the bag without wheels. Less comfort but less weight

Funny story beside: I was booked on a short hand for a video and photo shooting in Jerez, Spain.
Photo + video = lots of stuff. Jerez has a small airport ony for what we call "all inc. bomber"
Only holiday airlines with 20kg free luggage and each additional kg was charged with 10€ - one way.
It was hot midsummer, I was wearing my working boots, a sweater and a jacket. My case
was cluttered up completely and I was wearing my expensive Sennheiser headphones around my neck.
All others were in shorts and t-shirts.

When I got out of the airplane the captain said "have a nice holiday" and I replied "I am here for work"
"oh, you're a DJ.." It was very funny because indeed I was looking strange amongst these t-shirt people
but I was 52 and not looking as a DJ for sure.

Paul,

That's a nice setup and I do love the Trek-Pak. I would advise pulling the SSDs from the Odyssey for transport. The pull top handles protrude just a bit too much for my liking and if someone uses the case as a step then they might crush them.

Yeah, Think Tank backpacks are great. I used to use Pelicans and switch to backpacks about 3 years ago and have not turned back. It's just so much easier to carry and get around and I have yet to damage a single piece of gear in a backpack. Of course you cannot just throw it like a Pelican, but just be a little more cautious.

I also LOVE how the Think Tanks have a little lock cable. Several years ago, I had my camera bag with the 7D swiped while i wasn't looking for a moment. I was super bummed to say the least but it was insured. It's nice to have that locking cable so thieves cannot just quickly swipe it.
