Transferring P2 back to card

Hopefully you all can help me as I am at wits end with this issue. The Panasonic tech says its not possible to transfer P2 from the pc back to the p2 card. He says when you pass the MXF files through the pc drivers you can't transfer them back. I have the camera hooked up and can transfer the files to the computer just fine. I can view them and edit them with Premiere, then export as p2 files. But I can't transfer it back to the card so I can play the clip on my HDTV. I tried dragging the files from the pc to the drive folder, but I get an error message about a I/O device error. in p2 viewer, I also see the contents of the virtual card I set up on the pc and the contents of the p2 card in the secondary window but when I drag from virtual card to p2 card, I get another error. I can't do this with the edited p2 files nor the original file. I know its possible. I've watched other do this. I think the Panny tech wanted to go to lunch or something so he said that to get me on my way.

Please help. Having to burn clips onto blueray each time I want to view them on my livingroom hdtv after editing is ridiculous. What am I missing?

Thanks!

Where are you getting the error? In your PC or when you try to view the clips in the camera?

If in the camera, have you tried to play back the clips anyway?

If it doesn't work, or if you're getting the error in your PC, then it could be a protocol within the HVX firmware.

As long as you have the file structure intact, transferring back to the card is no problem if the card is in a PCMCIA slot. It will sometimes give you a warning in the camera, but you can ignore it, and I've never seen it not work.

Sure you can transfer files back. You can either print back to the camera as DVCProHD, or you can copy files back to the cards when they are mounted on your computer.

The errors are on the pc. It says I/O device error. I'm not editing on a laptop, so the camera is linked via USB and the camera is in host mode. Are you saying the only way to transfer to the card is via the PCMIA slot? Or do I just need to update the firmware on the camera?

Can you walk me through these options as if I'm a fifth grader? I think I have already tried this but maybe I'm missing something.

Sorry, I don't use Premiere. But in Edius I can use Print To File-> HD P2 Clip and then select a mounted P2 card or output to a folder on the hard disk. Edius will even span the sequence across multiple cards if it doesn't fit.

Edius should also be able to use Print To Tape using a Firewire connection and by putting the HVX into dub mode, although I've never tried that. That's the approach I would try to take with Premiere.

I tried that as well. exporting p2 to the drive "J" (the camera shows up as this drive). I still get the error. I saw this thread in another forum and it looks like this guy had the same problem but with another NLE:

It seems that I can try checking all the driver options/boxes when installing the cd that came with the camera, and/or updating the firmware on the camera. Should I try that?

I'm not aware of any fixes in the firmware related to outputting to the camera, but if you're not using V4.06, I would update it anyway to get support for the latest P2 card models and small bug fixes.

The drivers should also be kept up-to-date, but I suspect that if you can already read from the cards, you should have no trouble writing to them. You should check to make sure the cards aren't physically write-protected, and if you are running AV software, try excluding the drives that map to the P2 cards from AV scans.

Okay I was messing around with the multiple USP ports on my computer and TADA! One of them apparently made it work. How strange. Oh well, I can rest now! Thanks for all your help!
