Transferring footage - cable not recognized

I apologize if this is an amateur question, and/or has been covered (I couldn't find anything in a search. I recently purchased a 7D and was trying to transfer my footage to my computer with the included USB cable. I plugged in the cable to my laptop (Macbook Pro) and also my desktop (G5 Quad) and nothing came up as it being mounted. The top screen on the camera flashes 'busy' when I try to push a button, but nothing else happens.

I came from a Rebel XT, and the memory card would always mount as a drive upon connection without me having to do anything else.

I have a card reader, and that's what I'll be doing mostly, but I'd like to have both options.

Is there some sort of output setting I need to change on the camera to have it recognize? Maybe a bad cable, or (hopefully not) a bad port on the camera? I'm hoping it's just a setting, but I haven't found anything on it in the manual.
 
Start up the EOS utility application. Its supposed to start by itself when but half the time mine doesn't

BTW snow leopard is a no go - its been a few weeks since I looked 4 an update but to my knowledge they are not compatible

edit: sorry to ask this question but just checking, you have installed the EOS utility haven't you?
 
Yeah - installed the EOS utility, but nothing. I haven't checked all the settings, though. Even so, with the Rebel, it just mounted as a drive in finder, and I could drag the files where I wanted them. I didn't have to go through EOS.

But, I am on Snow Leopard, so that could explain it?
