transfer back to P2 cards?

1) Does anyone know if it's possilbe to transfer files back onto P2 cards after re-formatting?
2) Is the only way to do P2-to-DV dubs before you wipe the P2 cards?

We're looking to transfer back from P2 store or a laptop. Basically looking to do nightly mini-DV dubs (in-camera) of all P2 material. Why? For the sake of back-up and the fact that the delivery is standard def anyway.

Thanks -

1. The IT worflow means you can copy files back and forth freely. As long as you keep the P2 card formatted using the FAT32 file system and keep the correct folder and file names, you can copy things back onto the P2 card and manipulate it in the camera.

2. You can't dub a card after erasing it. But seriously, if you copy something back onto a P2 card, you can dub it in the camera provided that it is not in DV25 format to begin with -- for some reason the camera can't dub DV25 to tape.

Right on. I tested it out and worked just fine with one file but am wary of how it'll work with an entire 8 gig card .

Is there any difference between just dragging and copying files straight off of a P2 card or the P2 store onto a hard drive and using the disk utility to make a copy? The only problem I've run into is that the P2 store works in 4 gig partitions and I'm using 8 gig cards. I haven't been able to use the disk utitlity to make copies from the p2 store and figured the partitions were the reason.

It doesn't matter if it is one file or several, and whether you copy the files manually or using a utility.

Which disk utility are you referring to? Are you using a PC or a Mac?

Right on. I'll keep testing. I'm on a Mac and was using the Disk Utility found in the utitlities folder. Stilll having trouble making a copy of the volume either from p2 cards or p2 store.

Is it possible to copy an post-production file back to P2 card for playback? We shot some stuff and edited it, and now we want to put back on the P2 card for playback directly from the camera. I assume that'd mean we would need to export to mxf format?

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheers

Avid 5.7, EDIUS Broadcast, and Raylight all let you author MXF files back to the card.

For FCP you have to "print to video" back to the camera through firewire, and have the camera record the incoming data stream onto its cards.

print video works like a charm - just a couple of tips for folks (might save you the 30 mins it took me):

HVX connected via firewire.
HVX in video deck mode
Make sure you are not in the thumbnails view (sat on this one for a while)

FCP controlled the camera and recorded no problem - I think it was because I set other->1394 control to "ext" - just a hunch though :)

One might add one caution to this: always remember to turn OFF the camera before connecting Firewire. Many tales of cameras zapped by Firewire being connected to computer while camera is on. I've stuck a red label marked 'OFF?' on the cover to remind me.
