I have spent a decent bit of time lately trying to hammer out a good solution for editing 7D footage in premiere cs4 without dropping a hundred bucks on neoscene. The avid DNxHD codec looks great to me and all, but when playing back in premiere the video is not smooth (I have already tried turning the playback quality down and downsizing the video, etc). I tested the avid codec in vegas 9's trial and it played back perfectly fine. The only problem is that I don't own vegas, and after messing with it for a while I really dislike the user interface to the point where I really prefer to stick with premiere. That said is anyone able to get the avid DNxHD codec to playback smoothly in premiere cs4 (I don't want to use proxies if possible)?
If not, i can't believe there is no free HD codec that premiere can handle well in the timeline. I have tested neoscene's trial and it does indeed play smoothly in premiere, but I simply can't believe there isnt a free alternative.
Side note, the computer I edit on is a 3.2Ghz core2duo with 8 gigs ram, 512mb 8800gt gfx, and eSata external hdds. I know this isnt the best computer in the world, but I imagine it should be generally fine for editing (and as mentioned earlier, things playback just fine in Vegas 9's trial on the same computer).
Any help/advice on this would be greatly appreciated!
